Yep, just mix and match the features of the existing weapons, e.g. an auto pistol that fires HEAP rounds would use the autopistol range charts, the snub pistol armour chart and do 4d damage.

Depends on your definitions of 'simple' and 'design'. Sigg's idea's a bit of fudge, but it's simple and probably close enough.
