has there been a poll about "most common rules-set in current use"?
as in; not "which do you like"?
but;
"are you actively involved in a game? and if 'yes', what rules are you using?

Just conciously noticed the thread-poll asking exactly this question. maybe that's what brought this on.
mod-gods feel free to delete this foolishness.
sorry, mah bad.

Not recently.

So, here we go...

nice. thanks, Aramis.

so, the vote goes to Mongoose Traveller, for me.
weekly game, three players.
we fully intend to shift to T5, likely soon. three of us own it, the fourth is a novice player, he owns dice. {don't get me wrong, he's good, and does his homework better than some guys I've known who've been playing twenty years. but as of two months ago his entire tabletop cred consisted of 'some D&D' and a positive attitude.} MT was what I had a ton of books for, and it has a learning curve like a parking lot. So, there it goes.
in any case, I'm beating my face against T5Book1, as often as I can, and when I finish hashing out conversions and feel comfortable enough to run without checking 5 things every 8 minutes, we'll jump.
thanks for playing, folks!

Ever since MT came out it has been my go-to system. My last campaign has ended and that group has disbanded (and I moved to a new country). I now have two new groups interested in playing Traveller (one local, one online) and they will both be T5. But since neither has started yet I recorded a vote as "Not playing anything right now".

You're welcome. Note that I realized I needed more options... so I've upped the poll answer options limit

For me, I'm playing in an Imperium, but it's not Traveller's Imperium, and it isn't Traveller Rules... FFG's Star Wars - Age of Rebellion. 6 players, weekly, face to face, plus me... my family is half the group. My wife and both kids are playing.

There should be an option for home-brew rules based on a mash up of the best bits :)

About to start MgT Secret of the Ancients as a follow on from my War of the Ancients campaign from a couple of years back.

I put down Traveller with some other rules-set, as you do not have a Traveller rules fusion choice.

Primarily, I am using Mongoose, with chunks of T5, MegaTraveller and Classic.

If anything, MT made OTU information more accessible and portable, as well as expanding the rules. My first Traveller games used The Traveller Book + MT Imperial Encyclopedia + MT Referee's Companion as the 'core rules'.

Not running or participating in a game right now.

I was running T20 with TNE+MT+home rules settings. I was planning on switching to T5 rules with an online game. But the rules are a bit in need of examples and a clear errata. I do not have the time to re-plan for a small ship universe.
I was hoping for an easy migration to T5 from other versions. :oo:

I have CT, GT, some MgT, T4 but have no interest in these editions other than settings.
I suppose I could examine T20 with TNE+MT+T5+home rules but lets get messy.

For our SBRD campaign I am using CT, with The Traveller Book as my primary reference. My intention is to stick to CT where CT has a rule to cover something, and where there is no applicable CT rule then look to other versions or make something up.

For recent Traveller-ish games played at home with my sons, we have used either GURPS or Fudge.

For those rare and brief campaigns back in college in the early 1980s, we used CT with some houserules.

I do own some other versions that I look to for inspiration and reference: GURPS Traveller, MegaTraveller (original release boxed set), and Mongoose Traveller (PDF from DriveThru).

Surprised to see T5 as high as it is. And as a pure ruleset in use, with no other Traveller editions stapled to it.

I'm surprised at how low MegaTraveller sits - but then I realize: most of the MT fans are either not running Traveller at the moment, or are running Mongoose simply because of availability in dead tree.

Snapshot of current standings, ordered by number of votes:
1 Mongoose Traveller3025.64%
2 Classic Traveller 2723.08%
3 T52218.80%
4 Not playing anything right now.119.40%
5 Hybrid of multiple editions86.84%
6 GURPS Traveller54.27%
6 Not using Traveller Rules at the moment.54.27%
8 MegaTraveller32.56%
8 T20 Traveller's Handbook or SciFi2032.56%
10 Using Traveller setting with some other ruleset21.71%
11 Hero Traveller10.85%
12 Traveller: The New Era00%
12 T4 Marc Miller's Traveller00%

The T5 refs I know are still in the "I want to play this game some time" mode. Maybe some of them are in the "Not playing anything right now" category, if they use this forum? Adding some T5 rules to a CT game session, as others I know have stated doing, doesn't count as playing strictly "T5" to me. I don't think they use computers all that much, so no votes from them probably yet.

MgT is an easy add on to a CT game - task system and combat being superior to CT IMHO.

I just wonder if MWM had gone with using the MgT basic game to build T5 on we would have a better game all round.

T5 could have been MgT advanced - character generation, the makers, the tech chapters all offer some really good stuff.

Instead what we have is set A - CT, MT, MgT broad compatibility - and set B - T4, T5 compatibility - but you have a really hard time making set A work well with set B rules wise.

These 4 items confuse the results. These people could be buying, studying or involved in the rulesets without concentrating on playing one specific set:

Not using Traveller Rules at the moment.

Not playing anything right now.

Hybrid of multiple editions

The poll isn't "What are you buying" - that's a different question entirely. The answer would be almost exclusively MGT or Nothing at the moment, as that's what's available with new content.

I bought T5... I am planning on studying T5 once the errata is available.
I agree and disagree.

Aramis, do you think the MT numbers shows a resurgence or long term players? I wonder if people frustrated with T5 are turning to MT and not MgT. MT has an errata.

Long term would be my guess.

Risus Traveller here. I am so very satisfied with personal combat, starship combat, shipbuilding and repair minigames I made based on Risus Companion rules extension. They are a little more abstract than CT combat, but every group I played with loved them.

Currently trying to develop minigames for racing/chasing, gas giant skimming and trade.
