Some manufacturers were no longer around. Others couldn't afford the arm & leg MS wanted to approve them.

In my case it was an ATI graphics card for a Sony laptop. (The problem was that within a week of installing, and I tried this multiple times, it lost the ability to handle DirectX or play AVIs.)

The laptop originally came with XP but Sony did offer some initial beta drivers for Vista even though by that time the laptop in question was a discontinued line. ATI still supported the comparable desktop drivers but refused to support any laptop drivers ... saying that support for all laptop graphics cards was only through the laptop manufacturer.

There is a direct x control panel I downloaded to help me with that, I may still have it, I can send it to you if you want it.

I use WIN7,its nice.Enter the world of Thirst of Night, a dark fantasy, browser-based strategy game. Take your role as a vampire overlord that has just taken over a city of humans. With the advice of your generals, build your city, develop resources, grow an army, and train your own personal gargoyle. Join with other vampires, or fight against them, as you battle for dominance in a dark future.

Counting down to 26. October 2012. Win8 pre-ordered for tablet and desktop as well as replacing the penguin on the home server. Already using the RCs for some time. Great system.

I only venture to the Dark Side when I need to do editing for the Civilization 3 computer game, as I am still trying to get the Mac editor to work properly.

Otherwise, windows are for letting light into the house, and for opening when the temperature outside is moderate. Oh, and also for cats to stare outside at the birds, geese, chipmunks, squirrels, and assorted other "Kitty TV" critters.

Holey moley! That many people still use XP?

Vista and later requires more thorough authentification.

XP and earlier you can reinstall with less hassle, and if you upgrade your hardware, you can port it with.

I use what is most convenient, 7 came loaded on my new laptop.

Most people do... sadly, this has emboldened M$ (and Apple). It used to be that system upgrades were in fact UPgrades.

Microsoft is rolling out upgrades that are at best beta-quality, and not worthwhile.

Apple, likewise, is rolling out half-baked "upgrades" that similarly less than essential.

Still, I like 10.6.

If you are using multiple different machines, it is easiest if they have the same OS. However, it is not the "best" solution, I agree. I just heard that one in five laptops made in China come with malware installed, good greif.

Mine's changed from this old poll, too. I was Win98, I'm now Linux, and the stress relief is unbelievable. It's like emigrating from the USSR.

Wouldn't touch XP, and forget any subsequent Wincrap.

Microsoft's "Your software, hardware, and your very soul belongs to me - ask permission to think" attitude made me halt at Win2k, then I took the time to figure out how to use Linux.

I've never looked back. :)

I'm not sure that's really true of MS, Apple sure, but not MS. After Win98, I had a good experience with XP Professional, Vista Ultimate was quite good (tried it after SP1 so missed most of the reported issues), now happily using Win7 Ultimate.

Tried Linux once. That's 9 months of my life I'm never getting back. What a disaster. No doubt a different and newer distro would be 'better', but everything I want to run works under Windows (with negligable maintenance overhead) so why bother?
