What would be considered SciFi in the Traveller Universe?

Been thinking about some SciFi topics and it made me wonder what would be considered Science Fiction in the far future of Traveller time line.

Dave Chase

Yes, TL G+, including time travel, personal (non-PSI) teleportation and planet-shifting. Also TL 8+ settings including things which are taboo in the mainstream Imperial society such as heavy cybernetics, virtual reality and very heavy bio-mods.

Anything that Imperial Research Stations are looking into...

which include:
anti-matter containment, artificial intelligence, bionics, black globe development, black hole research (both of large-scale and mini black holes), cryptography, deep planetary core soundings, deep radar analysis, disintegrator beams, genetic manipulation, gravity manipulation (advanced), instantaneous transmitter development (so far proving impossible), long-range detection systems, magic (so-called), nova prediction and prevention, personal shields, psionics, psychohistory (mass population behaviour prediction), robotics, stable superheavy elements , stasis and time travel, super-conductors (high-temperature), weaponry research (advanced), and x-ray laser technology.

Reminds me of that wonderful line from Serenity.

It sounds like Science Fiction.
Honey, you live on a spaceship.
So, what's your point?

(Or something similar.)

Wouldn't the equivalent to Sci-Fi, depend on where you were? I mean to a TL3, talking about guns would be Science FIction.

MegaTraveller is a syndicated holo-vid series IMCTU - it's a bit like 24 and Alias. ;)

I agree that sci-fi is TLG+ - I imagine that alternative histories are popular as well.

Another series that resembles the Far Future of Traveller could be Blake's 7.

However, I would rather believe that the future of Traveller is somehow represented by a polygot state representing all the major races working together for a common end. Their endeavours are mainly scientific but the search for knowledge beyond Chartered Space, which is where the military has a role but it is very much subordinated to civilian aims. The noblest profession is that of scientist or academic.

No, the future of Traveller is Blakes 7. At least, it is IMTU ...
