'Great North Road' by Peter F. Hamilton had a planet with a ring around it that was part of a murder mystery. There was a Zone around the equator of the planet that was inhospitable due to stuff from the ring falling to the planet. Don't know how realistic that is, but it sure was interesting.

It is a good book. Seveneves by Stephenson has the moon be destroyed, similar to what the rings are around Saturn, a debris ring from a shattered moon (satellite) and here the effect of heating would be bad. Seveneves is all about how people survive.
