What's For Dinner?

[partial hijack]I too liked a lot about the Enterprise series when it was dealing with events that would clearly lead to the Federation as we have come to know it (including the dark underbelly DS9 hinted at) - even the Xindi story arc (stripped of the time war element it would have been much better).[return to thread]

Actually the Star Trek hijack ties in nicely with food being culturally biased.

In one of James White's recent Sctor General novels, the new Dietician is having trouble with feeding a large sentient carnivorous fish. The species is used to chasing its food before eating it, so the Dietician had to come up with an edible underwater drive system to wrap the meal around in order to make the food palatable to the patients.

The Movie "Silent Running" with Bruce Dern also brought up the whole vat grown food vs "real" food.

In that movie, Dern's character grows his own food, but the other members of the crew think it is disgusting as they eat their Blue and Yellow Cubes.
