Welcome to the new COTI server. We've moved the Citizens to a new server. Please let us know in the COTI Website issue forum if you find any problems.
We, the systems administration staff, apologize for this unexpected outage of the boards. We have resolved the root cause of the problem and there should be no further disruptions.
Traveller, has been a much harder sell in Toronto. Partially because of the only product in large numbers is online. But, other than D&D, rpgs are declining in this market, ironic because they are flourishing just outside of it...and without a car, I cannot easily get to these games.
I played about 3 weeks ago. CT with some tweaking. Pretty interesting and I have never had such a diverse charcter ever before. He is something special have a bit of something in every where almost.
Yesterday my brother and I ran through a Mongoose ship combat. It took us a couple of hours to figure it out and for him to cripple my ship. I was doing well until a lucky shot crippled my M-drive. We decided that there would be no ship combat in our gaming session. It's too lethal and time consuming.
Our wives have consented to gaming today unless it's a really nice day out (we are at the beach for the week). None of the rest of our families have ever played Traveller. I have distilled the T5 rules down to exactly what (I think) they need to be able to get going. I will submit my observations on this "Fast Start" version over in the T5 section of the board, but will try to come back to this thread as well.
If you want to include ship combat as part of the role playing game I would recommend ignoring the boardgame versions of ship to ship combat - they take too long.
There is a much faster range band based version in Starter Edition Traveller, or better yet adapt the combat system hidden in the CT ship's boat skill.
Finally make sure every PC has something to do during ship combat.

Traveller is in regular rotation for my gaming group. Along with MechWarrior, Shadowrun, D&D (5th ed now) and Abberant. We also play a variety of board games too, and weekends in the S.C.A., and.....yeah, basically I am lucky enough to know a lot of gamers.
