Who is that lady?

jackleg

SOC-12
Now I may have missed on the forum list, has it ever been determined/decided who the regal looking lady on the cover of the TNE sourcebook was. Was she a TED or a descendant of Norris? Thanks.

I think she's supposed to be the Empress - as in the Empress Wave - that Strephon sees via Longbow. The Empress Wave is apparently a psionic wave spreading out from coreward that really screws up the Zhodani when it hits the Consulate.
Though nobody actually knows what it really is or who the 'Empress' is, or even if she's real. It's mentioned a bit more in the Regency Sourcebook.

It's all rather mysterious. ;)

IIUC from several places, she was originally something "cool" the artist drew on the cover for the main book. Apparently this inspired David Nilsen to come with the Empress of the Empress wave. I think it's one of those things we'll never _quite_ know for certain.

</font>
Isn't the timing wrong? Survival Margin came out before the TNE corebook, and the Empress was mentioned first in SM. So it sounds like the idea came first, and then the artwork was done.

Unless the art was commissioned while Nilsen was writing Survival Margin...

GDW's Challenge magazine held a contest for a free copy of the Deluxe TNE boxed set asking who the lady was: a Canadian won with the guess that it was, in fact, the "Empress Wave" figure. I understand other guesses included Gabriella Ramstatten and Cher. Apparently the cover made such an impression when it was originally submitted that the writers had to duke it out over who had dibs on the lady's identity.

Thanks for adding the link Doc: it's pretty neat having the image handy like that. For me this only deepens the mystery of the Empress Wave. Why is this impression psionically propogated along the wavefront? Is it a signature? Is this just how the human mind visually interprets the wave? Still, it would've made a fine Empress Solee.

Personally, I'd prefer the Empress to be the woman on the upper right of the TNE cover. A psionically gifted empress scares me. An emperess who has fought and bled her own blood for her right to rule deserves to rule. If she's the heir to the throne, I'll follow her to the heart of darkness without a second thought. Give me the woman on the right as my empress any day.

The 'Empress' is the leader of the great Yaskoydri psionic conclave that sent the distress signal/flight-imperative which forms the psionic component of the so-called Empress Wave. The image in interpreted differently by varios recipients.

1248 gets into this in more detail.

Ancients survivors? Droyne? Grandfather?</font>
Does she look like a Droyne? ;)

No, the Yaskoydri are neither Ancients nor Droyne.

Solomani, Zhodani, Vilani... Yaskoydri. Literally 'Grandfather's Children/Descendants'

Hmm, that's misleading. I dodn't mean to imply that the first three are all Yaskoydri. The latter are a separate group.
