Why I Like Traveller

I work as a librarian in real life. I often the library as encapsulation of all human knowledge (however partial) to be found on the shelves of my library. I extend this metaphor often to Traveller whereby there is the whole universe in this game, even if it is only partial. Players can marvel at the immense vastness of all whilst concentrating on the minute. Traveller is simply the universe.

(With apologies to Kipling)

I like the Imperium, dark and dingy,
* Merchants struggling to survive
* Mercenaries fighting to stay alive
* Ine Givar trying to Thrive
Flying through the ever-night

I like the imperium bright and hopeful
* Medicine to make you whole
* Zhodani pleasant life as prole
* Nobless Oblige will set your goal
Flying through the ever-night

I like the imperium vast and wide
* Verdant pastures blue and green
* Wypoc melts you, quite the scene
* Vacuum flowers ever clean
Flying through the ever-night

I like the Imperium, a story told
* Talse of triumphs, and tales of woes
* Zhodani, Solomani, Vargr: our foes Foes
* Friendly Aliens to our aid they goes
Flying through the ever-night
No apologies required. Well done.

Yeah, that's the bit forme as well - 20 years ago I loved it because it seemed so open. And it's the same today. Out of the box (and not necessarily talking TNE or the others with heavily defined settings) Traveller is that game that says, "Hey, rioll up some characters and stuff, fit stories to them, and off you go in a new universe that didn't exist a little while ago!" I love that feeling of newness, wonder, challenge, gritty horror and down and dirty deeds that get mixed into a Traveller game. I have other games for other things, but I've only got Traveller for that.

What I like is how a string of numbers and letters can get your imagination going. Simply roll up a system and it is impossible not to think of life there.
