Welcome to the new COTI server. We've moved the Citizens to a new server. Please let us know in the COTI Website issue forum if you find any problems.
We, the systems administration staff, apologize for this unexpected outage of the boards. We have resolved the root cause of the problem and there should be no further disruptions.
Will the Universal Windows Platform help or hurt the UWP? Will modern programmers be confused to see Traveller using a UWP, or will they be able to figure things out rule-wise?
Since Microsoft is adding back in the dash after the starport1, their UWP will confuse players as well as break the existing SEC parsers.
And this thread will probably confuse people who don't write software on a Windows platform...
1the old embrace, extend, extinguish methodology. Which they no longer pursue (and continuing this aspect of the conversation would need to go into the Pit)
Dang, we really need a like button for some of these posts! I had forgotten that naming convention.
(digging up my old quadrant and the UWP / UPP are all typed via a manual typewriter as A-123456-C. Complete with whiteout on occasion. Good times. Sort of like this weekend: too much snow, my wife & child are both away, so all I've done is play with Traveller. And read a lot)
I cast resurrection! UWP is pretty much DOA, though still used. MS has shifted focus again. If they had managed to make the Winphone work, then it would probably have been more successful. But lacking that 3rd leg for an instant app store, and the heavy early limitations it had, plus the apparent lack of focus, pretty much stopped it.
While not hard to write in, and they have made significant improvements, with the .Net Core stuff available on most platforms, it is no longer really being heavily used.
I recall UPP/UWP confusion--guess nobody noticed in the '70s that having the first two profiles (Personal/Planet) might be confusing.
I always liked to make them easier to read myself: UPP as 123-456 (physical-mental/social) and UWP as A-123-456-7 (port-physical-people-tech), but that's just me. . . .

I always did the A-123456-7 for UWP so visually it stood out. Of course, then they change the format on me...
And honestly, cannot recall if the version I have (and it is only a few feet away but I have to somehow get past the piles of boxes of other games & minis in my fortress of gamitood) was UPP for both or not. Next time I reach around the precarious pile I'll have to check.
