I know it's not SciFi, but often SciFi and Fantasy fans come hand and hand so I thought I would comment here.
The Song of Ice and Fire novels are ranked in my top 3 Fantasy picks and it's coming to HBO. The series will be called Game of Thrones after its first book which the first season will cover.

It's fantasy, but not what you would expect. Very dark (sometimes too much so - some sexual scenes could have been left out) and actually has little in the way of fantasy elements. It's the wonderful characters (not just black & white villians & heroes), drama, and plot twists (you truly never know what will happen next) that makes these books ranked with Shannara and Lord of the Rings for me when it comes to this genre.
