(Tongue and Cheek with some factual history used to make the future predictions)
During the First week of July 2085, mass solar flares are observed. Above normal solar activity and flares have been predicted for over a decade but the level or activity is well beyond anyone's prediction.
Many Satellites and even some limited spacecraft/space stations are in place by or before Feb 2085 for observation. There are even 2 stations (one of them manned) on the moon just for the event.
During the solar flares massive readings in not only radiation but magnetic/gravitation fluxes are recorded. One solar flare loop reaches beyond the orbit of Mercury much to the surprise of everyone. And much more surprising is that Mercury moves through the Flare loop.
Observations of Mercury determine that the magnetic poles have been reversed along with some major earthquakes and land mass changes.
Speculation over the next decade along with some recon Satellite missions determine some of the actual changes of Mercury. The most debated of these new hypothesis is that Earth might have done the same during a major solar flare activity in the near past (near past in geology terms not human terms). Part evidence to support this is core samples taken from lava flows during the July 2085 solar activity. Some of the samples show abnormal readings of magnetic direction. Over the course of several months after July 2085 several new substances are discovered among lava flows and geothermal vents. Several normal chemical process used during everyday manufacturing show completely different outcomes during several of the massive radiation/magnetic/gravitation fluxes. Over the next 10 years major battles in the courts happen over the patent/process rights between several corporations and countries.
On another note, one of the specialized research teams funded by a private organization has discovered something totally unexpected during the solar flare event. They keep the information to them selves for about 2 weeks until an amateur observer makes a local news broadcast with some of the same amazing discovery. It turns out an almost dark comet was making its way sunward and passed through one of the massive solar flare loops. It then disappeared. One week later (165 hours) it re-appeared just beyond the orbit of Pluto in a straight line of travel from its last know point of appearance. It seemed to suddenly appear in the sky still traveling at the same speed as its approach to the Sun.
Over the next few years after this discovery, a Faster than light theory is devised and the testing of such theory is begun which later leads to the first Jump Drive engine.
NOTE: My actual prediction is that a solar flare loop will reach beyond Earth orbit (about 1.3 AU) and cause the poles to change direction but that would change the OTU so I modified to the above.
