The doomed suitcase
A suitcase with a "bric a brac" of much of the above suggestions (stollen by the crazy mistress and guarded by her zombies of course). Only one piece of the junk heap is really the prize and every thing else are rumors or items expensive enough to create the illusion of "priceless heirlooms".
Of course most rumors will have their pursuers and some of those pursuers are mythomaniac to the point that even if you give them the item they look for, they will not believe you gave them the real thing unless you give them something that does not exist (I want the real copy of the Warren Report, the one that proves that there was three shooters!).
Everyone that once upon a time touched that suitcase will be forever hunted...

Yeah but having a serial killer aboard in jump space sounds so much fun...
But how many serials are there aboard to be killed???
As Schlock Mercenary points out, massively parallel killers are much more of a problem.
