Canon for the Vanguard Reaches and The Beyond

You guys... actually, I needed the laugh this morning. My mother-in-law has been hospitalized with chest pains.

Thank you for the distraction.

I'm not sure if it counts as canon, but Mongoose are publishing a free 10-part epic campaing set in the Trojan Reaches, The Pirates of Drinax. The first 9 parts are already up and the final episode is due out soon, if the author can tear himself away from revolutionising horror campaign writing for long enough to finish it.

The campaign folows the PC's exploits as Drinaxian sponsored pirates/privateers. It's a very sandboxy game that involves a lot of exploration, swashbuckling and diplomacy so it ranges far beyond just Drinax itself.

It''s written by Gareth, who also wrote the Mongoose Traveller main rulebook.

We're aware of it, but Drinax doesn't have an impact on Vanguard Reaches or the Beyond (or at least it shouldn't, as it was presented to Marc and I...)

So what are you going to do about the Weltbund when you get to the Beyond? :devil:

Theoretically, since Foreven to Coreward is a GM-Preserve, there is no official "Canon" regarding the coreward part of the polity in question on TravellerMap. Weltenbund should be able to remain Weltenbund in The Beyond, and one ought to be able to make up whatever one wishes concerning the Coreward Foreven section:
1) Retaining it as an independent Avalar Consulate;
2) Redesignating it as the Coreward portion of a "Greater Weltenbund";
3) Designating the Rimward portions of the polity in The Beyond as a disputed breakwaway state (Weltenbund) from its prior allegiance to the Avalar Consulate in Foreven;
4) The Weltenbund having a long history in the Beyond, but recent events having the Avalar Consulate in Foreven dominating it and/or attempting to seize it (or the Coreward portions of it, at any rate).
Or perhaps some combination of the above over the course of the region's history. Is there a possible relationship between the Avalar Consulate and Weltenbund over the centuries? Might the Zhodani have set up a puppet state in the Coreward portions of Weltenbund at some time in the past subsequent to its creation?

Good point, I'd forgotten about the Borderlands. Mongoose is really going full-in on the Trojan Reaches at the moment.

It makes sense. PoD is a great pull to get people interested in the sector, and while it's free, why not capitalise on that interest by putting out more related setting info? Anyone planning on running PoD (and I'm sorely tempted myself, it's just amatter of time) will snap that stuff up in a heartbeat.

That's correct, it shouldn't. From everything I have seen so far none of what is in the Pirates of Drinax campaign, or the other material Mongoose has published for the Trojan Reach sector (including the Aslan alien book, Trojan Reach sector book, and the recent items for The Borderland subsector) would have any impact on the Vanguard Reaches of Beyond sectors as they are written.

What happens after you let a group of players loose in that sandbox, well that is another story. :)

As for the laughs, glad I could help. Next show is at 1:00pm Eastern. :D

I am currently running PoD and loving it. It was the inspiration behind the World Lookup Tool spreadsheet I am working on (you can find it in the Software section). And yes, if the plan was to get people to buy other Trojan Reach related books, it is working. :)

Florian League

One thing that would be a minor consideration, however, is that the Florian League (which is mostly in the Trojan Reach but extends into The Beyond's Trailing edge) will have to be addressed, because Don Rapp's original treatment of The Beyond did not designate any worlds belonging to this (or any other) polity in that region.

Also, Chuck Kallenbach labelled several worlds in the Pandemonium Sector of the Vanguard Reach as belonging to a small mini-state called "The Florian League". What their relationship is (if any) to the canonical Florian League will have to be addressed.

Good point. I am not that familiar with the Beyond and Vanguard Reaches, but yes, the Florians are in the materials from Mongoose about the Trojan Reach so that will have to be reconciled.

Craig64 clarified that the thread was intended to be about Trojan Reaches - third post in the thread - so I figured Drinax was on-topic.

DonM has apparently (whether intentionally or not) re-tasked this thread for the Vanguard Reaches and The Beyond (based on the existing thread title) due to his post in Post #12 of this thread.

Perhaps a Moderator should split this thread into two and change the title of the existing thread to "Canon for the Trojan Reach", and create a new one "Canon for the Vanguard Reaches & The Beyond" specifically the for the T5SS treatment of the Vanguard Reaches & The Beyond?
