What Rules Do We Use to Design Ships?

1. High Guard or a variant
2. Book 2 (probably houseruled)
3. Mongoose Traveller 1e Basic

On this forum, High Guard is a clear winner by far. The runners-up are both essentially what I would call extensions of Book 2. I think Mongoose 1e hit a chord with players in the amount of options they wanted with a more or less Book 2 like experience.

Note that players of GURPS: Traveller probably post on the Steve Jackson forums, so results are skewed, I know.

The perceived main benefits of High Guard are (1) the scope and support for different TLs in Charted Space, and (2) the relatively straightforward and compact equations used for drive calculations.

Do We Use Trade Rules?

Yes. I've posted a new poll to pinpoint which trade rules are most currently used.

Do We Use Space Combat Rules?

Nope.

more to the point, there seems to be little interest in space combat as such.

I agree that these space combat rules garner little interest. But as far as the concept of space combat goes: there is ALWAYS interest in space combat.

I would agree that there is always interest in Space Combat (I certainly am, and am quite intrigued by what I have seen in the T5 space combat system, though I have not played it). But if I am a PC in an RPG (especially one who owns a ship), how much do I really want to get my multi-million credit ship shot up in space combat, especially when I have to pay for the repairs out of pocket. It is not as if I can pretend I am the Starship USS Enterprise and pull into the local starbase and say "fix her up" at someone else's expense.

If you are just running a generic ship-to-ship combat as a wargame, you don't necessarily care about the ships; you just throw them at each other and have fun. In an RPG, it is not as fun when it is your ship that is getting shot to pieces.

there is ALWAYS interest in space combat.

not here. posted to run three space combat games - one merchant trade war, one purely academic naval war, and one mixed. no takers. no questions. no responses at all.

there's always threads about fleet distribution, fleet dispositions, and fleet composition. even threads about fleet numbers. but not much interest in fleet action.

(or is it just me?)

It's partly that you're posting for what looks to be a wargame mode, rather than RP mode, event.

Me, I just use the MT VEHICLE combat rules, instead of the nasty HG variant.

I have ship combats in most campaigns I've run of Traveller. I have ACS vs ACS combats, tho', and the HG variants are pretty worthless, excepting T20, at that scale. But, since MT is my ruleset of choice, and the vehicle rules work just fine with starships... (p 80 of the Player's Manual has the Personal/Vehicle combat stats for ship weapons with UCP values converting to Pen/Atten Damage.)

I use Mayday as a movement system.

I'll have to check that out.

nobody responded to 1) the hospital ship rpg invitation, or to 2) the jump or "larger ship" wargame invitations, or to 3) the trade war mixed rpg/war game invitation. and geez, I thought the lu hao rpg invitation would generate a stampede of responses. I was ready to go on that one ....

I mean, it's not like there's a lot of competition or something.

not here.
