10 questions to ask Joe Fugate

Emailed him on Monday but so far no reply. Maybe give him two weeks and we will see...

So keep those questions coming...

My Question:

Since DGP products took the Traveller gaming world by storm when they were first introduced, rather than wonder what happened, why not pull a Steve Jobs, come back, and do it again?

Sorry guys, none yet. I have tried both of his emails...my guess is either he has backed out or is so swamped with work (most likely explaination)...

1) My guess is that he doesn't want to go through that hell again. Publishing RPG material and being creative on demand is not easy. (That's putting it extremely mildly).

2) He has no license to do Traveller. Given the way DGP was run financially at the end, (sell new products to pay old debts and hope you catch up some day), I'm not sure he'd find anyone to back him financially to get a license.

3) Much of the best stuff written by DGP was not done by Joe, and the talented people who helped make MT successful are likely to throw holy water on you today if you utter the word 'traveller'.

Just a few thoughts. . .

My questions for Joe:

1) Why didn't the design system integrate aircraft better?

2) Why the change from Jn * 10% (CT) to (Jn +1) * 5% for MT Jump Fuel? (I love the change, but it WAS a canon cracker!)

3) Why did you and the DGP guys let Roger Sanger run away with the IP's,

3.1) Did Roger actually make all his IP payments to you?
3.2) And Did they cleaar the bank?

4) Have you considered doing more work in the gamig industry? Perhaps more for Traveller?

5) Did you ineentioanally ignore Loren's article purporting all marines were Battledress Troops?

They dealt with this in one of the Traveller Q&A columns -- the jump-fuel change was intended to balance the increased fuel consumption for power plants that came from using the rates from Striker instead of HG (PPs in Striker and MT require about 4x more fuel than those in HG). What I never understood was why they chose to go with the rates from Striker when that caused a much bigger backwards-compatability problem than if they had gone the other way (the HG design system was WAY more widely-used than Striker!).

I think the reason was that MT envisaged a universal vehicle (sea, land, air, space, J-space) design system and so Striker was used as the basis of vehicle design rather than HG2.

Other than that speculation I agree.

That's really what I wanted to know.

Any update on this? (I know the holidays are a tough time, but heck, just consider this a little reminder/tickler to come back to this in early-to-mid January!)

Thanks! Dan

Don't worry my thoughts are the same. But, I think that it would be better that I don't bug Joe until the middle of Jan...

Maybe he has backed out and doesn't want to dash our hopes or maybe Sanger has nixed him and stated Joe is DGP property...

It is now nearly the middle of Feb...2004...

I emailed in Jan., as I promised the board each time and got no reply. On Monday, I email both his business account (he now runs a video production outfit) & his home email...

His home email bounced and I have yet to recieve anything from his business account. It could be that his business account has also changed or simply I have been put into a Junk Filter, as not one of his "contacts".

Or it could be that he has contacted Sanger for guidance and Sanger pulled out a legal agreement, not, to talk about DGP. Unfortunately, I do not wish to fuel rumours but it is crazy that we were having a lively email conversation before Christmas and now suddenly nothing.

If anything does materialize, in a positive direction, you can bet I will keep this board informed.

Till then spread the flame...

Things come up in real life. Maybe he has something that is serious enough to make other things 'optional' to respond to.

His model train website does state that JF sr is very busy at the moment - so before speaking ill of Roger maybe we should wait a bit longer...

Elliot & Kaladorn:

I agree with the waiting part, it just concerns me that the emails are not getting through but I guess there is no way of knowing...

In the meantime, naturally, I can always add questions...

Have you got through to Mr. Fugate yet. If yes, when can we get some answers to all the questions asked? If no, is he alright, or has Real Life(TM) taken over?

A combination of both, actually.

Real Life(TM) has meant that I have not my main computer and instead I have to rely upon a Mod I laptop.

When I get my desktop back, I will bug Joe again but when I last read his website, he was very, very busy but as I have not heard from him directly...I am not sure what is going on.

So keep the questions coming and I will add them to the list...
