1248

Yikes! That's as much of a hint as it is exquisite prose. Thank you for giving that to us. I am so wanting to see this book...

Perhaps. But if we do, I would hope to have a touch back to whenever and whatever it was in the days of the IWs that put Humaniti so firmly on what GURPS refers to (IIRC) as Safe-Tech.

There is a nasty in the past that kept us away from much of that for a long time - now that humaniti is facing it again, it could well be vital to remember what the ancestors learned painfully before the long night.

Just a stray thought...

What, Virus wasn't enough for you?! (AI is a transhumanist idea, after all...)

My vote would be for 96 page PDF, so as to allow us the fans to build it into a T20 monster.
Personally I'd like to see something about as big as TNE was, but all setting and no rules... but I think that's just a pipe dream :D . </font>
But it is a really nice pipe dream...

I'll be happy with any size, as long as it ties up the plot threads and mysteries from TNE (and makes new ones ;) ). Even a 'Survival Margin' equivalent for TNE would be great.
And it may even be that multiple books is more viable (one setting and rules lite, one say T20 specific and full of rules data; or one overview to 1248 (rule lite) and then more focused book more rules heavy) than a single big book. But I'm sure QLI will evaluate what their options are before committing to action.

And as you say, anything substantive that moves the time line on and 're-opens' the future of the OTU for gaming is good. Especially (given what he has hinted at so far) with MJD writing it!

Cheers,

Nick Middleton

Daryen has it about right.

1248 is about finding a way out of the darkness, and in some ways, the redemption of humaniti after the madness of the Final War.

<sigh>

How many 'Final Wars' or 'War to End All Wars' has humaniti fought?

Something tells me this Final War is no more Final than any of the N wars that were 'final' before it, unless we're actually dead. Even then, our war machines may persist.

I don't that MJD is trying to say that we are going to fight a War to end all Wars. We may hide our hubris and justify our actions that way.

Rather, I think that the new milieu is about creating something new out of the wreckage of the old. It is that emergence from the darkness, however much a stumble, groping toward a renewed hope seems to be message of TNE.

How does that sound, MJD?

</font>
'The Final War' was the one that unleashed Virus. It's like how World War One is referred to as 'The Great War'.

It was also 'the War to end All Wars'. Which, it did not. Any more than I suspect the Final War will be that.

My point was, it'll be the final war for exactly as long as it takes for the next war to arise, then they'll need to rename it as 'the virus war' or something because Final War won't be terribly meaningful.

Also, this is not a bad thing... since historically, several wars have been re-named or at least the most common name used for the war has changed over time.

And what a war is called will vary from area to area. Most Americans call the first round with Saddam in Kuwait as "The Persian Gulf War" and the second round as "The Second Persian Gulf War". People who were living in the area think of Iran-Iraq war as "The Persian Gulf War". So naming has a lot to do with what culture you're naming it from.

It isn't something to get excited about, I just meant to say that the designation 'Final' has been used before and it never has been correct.

Of course, wasn't it Santa Anna that said "Those who cannot remember their past are.... what was I saying? D'oh!" -- or maybe that was Homer.

Uh, I am pretty sure you are interpreting "Final War" wrong. He is probably calling it the Final War, not because there are no more wars, but because it caused the end of the Third Imperium.

MJD is pretty much on record that there are wars fought between 1130 and 1248. There are two great wars fought between 1200 and 1248.

Traveller Canon refers to two 'Final Wars' - the one that destroyed the Ancients and the one that did for the Third Imperium.

Yeah, but 'humanity's redemption after the Final War' implies that you're talkin about the latter one

Though if it's the first one you meant, that'd be kinda interesting

Yeah, but it could be 'final'...Like Dune's Butlerian Jihad against the machines ended the AI menace from that universe forever...

(Yeah, I just got done reading the second book in the series...so sue me...)

This is going to rock. No doubt about it.

That speech remined me so much of B5. Strugle of Light and Dark. (Man vs. Machine, Volorns/Shadows, Order/Chaos). Finding alies who once were enemies(Zhodani/Minbari).

Do we get to see what's behind the Dark Curtain? Is it the borg unimatrix 001? JK ;)

How about the Empress Wave thingy that makes the Zhodani and other psi's freak out?

Can't wait.

Question to MJD... If the curtain is no longer there in 1248. What poses the threat? I thought the big threat of the virus in the TNE had its origin in the curtain and then spread throughout Charted Space before returning and consolidating in the space called the Curtain...

I'm probably breaking an NDA by saying this, but the Klingons are also arriving in force from spinward... An epic threat like none the Imperium has ever seen!

(Sigh) No doubt someone had beleived Shane and is already howling in protest on a forum somewhere.

He's messing about, of course. The real threat is the Uber-Tribbles of Doom allied to a plague of cute robots...

O mighty Youthful Ancient...would you care to illuminate us on what has been left of the Virus? Has it scattered to the four corners of Charted Space, if the curtain is gone.

Are the threats even greater than the Virus or are they merely organic analogs?

BTW, what is the TL of the Fourth Imperium, supposively if they had access to 3I caches then they must be about TL E-F/G...

Rebuilding from the Final War of the Third Imperium and Virus would have to start at a lower common tech level. My guess would be that TL 0-8 is common (69.6%), TL 9-C is uncommon (19.4%), TL D-E is rare (8.3%) and TL F+ is very, very rare (2.7%).

YMMV
