2009 PBEM Trillion Credit Squadron Tournament

Trust me, you don't want to debug and support software running on an AS/400.

That thing makes Vilani computers look cutting edge....

...

I'm going to have to put off the game until March 1. Apologies for the slowness here, etc. etc. :(

Ahhh, I though you meant problems with a home PC...

RPG... and an untouchable layer of Java...

But RPG is clearly the lingua franca of the tribe.

I had one experience with RPG. Amazing for report generation but very picky (and I can't remember if it was RPG or RPG-II). Amazing the longevity of some systems still in active use (eventually it does get cheaper to replace rather than patch, but for some systems that is a lo-o-o-o-ong eventually!)

I was wondering if this was still going forward and if there is enough room for another. I'm n00bish but recently have acquired Book 5 and like to try my hand at it.

Aaaaaaaaaand...

We're back!

Just sent word to OIT and Ron Gianti about their battle. Three turns of long range missile combat so far! Woo-hoo!

Both ships are taking hits. This one's a fun game....

Let's see what's going on here....

I've got two games that I set up a couple months back. I'll start resolving them and then see who turns back up. Feel free to work up a ship for the recent Billion Credit Squadron game we started. I technically put a freeze on new entrants, but... if you just want to see how your design fares against the others in an informal combat we can probably do that. The only hitch is (if they're still out there) the other guys in the round robin are first in line for my referee time.

(It actually doesn't take long to resolve these BCS things-- the only hang up is the communications lag.... Though if each side has fairly comprehensive tactics/orders writeups, they can sorta run on automatic in a pinch....)

Uh oh....

Crew-1 hits are killer.

"Crew-n: The USP crew factor is reduced by n. Upon reduction of the crew factor
from its initial level, the ship may no longer fire its weapons or attempt repair,
although it may use its passive defenses, maneuver, or jump. This result does not
affect the frozen watch or ship's troops."

If you get this... and you don't have a frozen watch... then you are toast. You can only get the heck out at that point, right?

And... it is impossible for nuclear missiles to score crew hits with the radiation damage.

Oops. :)

That's one battle that will last a bit longer....

Yeah.

Okay... so OIT and Ron Gianti have completed turn three of their game.

BillDowns and Ron Gianti have completed turn one.

These battles are good and bloody so far.

(Ron Gianti's in two games because he's... uh... "here". I'm just randomly putting him up against everyone in the list right now instead of taking a roll call or anything like that. I'll just start doing the same thing for whoever chimes in. Everyone that shows up should get to play against all of the entries.)

I've got specs and "doctrine" from Skyth in my email account.

Let's see who else has an entry here....

Ah... here's one from Weaver.

And one more from Far Trader. (He doesn't seem to have any "doctrinal" notes. But then... he's Vargr... so he probably doesn't need them.)

Add them to OIT, BillDowns, and Ron Gianti's entries and you have a pretty comprehensive collection of design strategies.

I think this is everybody. I'm just searching the gmail account for "BCS", so I may be missing something... but this looks like it's everything I remember getting....

Yeah :D It's all about the chase! (thought I sent some vague orders along that line but maybe not) - basically...

They all attack trying to be the one who gets the most glory. Balance risk reward looking for "fair" fights for most glory but if outclassed will gang up on weakest (for a quick kill), then next weakest, and so on.

They won't attack any "dead" ships (not firing or moving) until the battle is won (all the enemy ships are "dead" or gone).

They won't quit as long as they can fight (gonna have to look up the design notes again, kinda forgots what I put in them).

(I'm heading out of town later for the week but will check in as able to see what's happening :) )

Okay... just got through turn 2 of a battle between Skyth and Ron Gianti.

far-trader is now set up to play against Ron Gianti as well. (This is the big rematch everybody's been talking about...!)

That just leaves Weaver's entry as the only one not getting any love. Once he is up... then Ron Gianti will have a game going with all five of his opponents. I'm going to postpone starting up any of far-trader's other games after this one until he his back in town....

Hey, I'm here, and ready to go. Come and get your love! Jeffr0, if you don't have my specs and doctrine, I'll send them to you again.

Best Regards,

Well, I'm glad I used the extra space to squeeze in a frozen watch. I never liked the way the Crew factor rules worked. I've usually played it as n0% crew loss per result, with breakpoints similar to fuel loss.

Cheers,
Bob W

I think I've got 'em, Bill.

The only issue so far is that my "fog of war" rules are probably hinky and unfairly applied. In some games, it doesn't matter... but other folk may get annoyed in particularly dicey matches.

Basically... on turn one and two... I tell you what's happened, but I don't give exact stats away. As the game progresses and "the sensor operator gets better information", I give slightly clearer hints as to what the odds are for certain actions....

If anyone's not liking that, please discuss it-- perhaps we can codify a standard before we get too far. I'm not sure that's necessary, but I don't want to tick anyone off....
