3D space combat software

Book 2 Combat version 4a is now available at http://www.petesprint.com/~wendell/Book2_4a.zip. This one has multiple ships and the beginnings of combat. To fire, move the mouse over a friendly ship until its label blinks, then move it over an enemy ship until its label blinks, then click the left mouse button.

It's just the very start of combat, so the "laser fire" is unlimited, very plain-looking, always hits, does no damage, and passes through planets (I guess it's a meson laser ;) ). It's still a technical test rather than a game - a way to make sure that everything works on other PCs before getting too deep into it. Please let me know if you encounter any bugs/crashes.

If you're feeling adventurous, the number and positions of ships can be changed by editing ScenarioShips.dat (it's a plain text file) in the data folder, but be careful since the documentation is minimal and there's no error checking. Eventually a scenario editor will make more options like this possible, with better presentation than editing a text file by hand.

Works great! Nice sound effects too.

Keep it coming,

Rob

P.S. I showed some friends up in Chicago version 3 last weekend, and they loved it.

Hello Wendellm.
Am i missing something but if maneuver drive is gravitic wouldnt there be no facing for a ship the drive would work in any direction you want, So weapon arcs need only to be forward (the ship can face in any direction but the drive works in the direction you want to go), After all its not a reaction drive with a big flame or anything.
Possibly making weapons fire a key stroke for each player would make combat realistic (getting in the alpha strike could make or break a battle).
Perhaps entering weapons skill for each battery on a ship would allow player skills to be used if a player moves to another weapon console (in the ship) it will take time so will changing there states in the ship model.
Keep up the good work.
BYE.

Has there been any progress on this?
Not in this incarnation, no. Among the reasons, a realization slowly dawned of just what was involved in programming in someone else's universe. After spending many dozens of hours on it, it would be up to the owner of that universe whether the game could be distributed publicly and under what conditions. I understand that and have no problem with it per se (since it isn't my game universe, after all), but prefer conditions that are less unpredictable.

Therefore, I'm currently focusing on creating an original universe for computer games. I'd still like to get back to this at some point in the future, but that will probably be a while.

Book 2 doesn't have arcs and neither do most of the later versions of ship combat. The only source I'm aware of for arcs is TNE/Brilliant Lances, and that's not really where I'd want to go.

That works well in Starfleet Command (and reflects the original split-second nature of Star Fleet Battles), but Traveller ship combat seems longer-scale than that. Also, Book 2 has a fixed sequence of fire and return fire.

Yes, the intention would be to follow the Book 2 rules for gunnery skill.

I don't know when I might be getting back to this project, but it will probably not be soon. Also, it would initially be straight Book 2 combat, with any house rules about arcs, simultaneous combat, etc. to come afterward.

As long as you give the appropriate credit and don't charge for it, there shouldn't be a problem.

Thrusters are reactionless but they're also directional - since Book 2, you've always had to turn around and fly backwards to decellerate.

Hello,
Somewhat new here, been hanging out in the dark conner. ;) How does one get this program? I've tried both links and get "no object found" errors.
