Book 2 Combat version 4a is now available at http://www.petesprint.com/~wendell/Book2_4a.zip. This one has multiple ships and the beginnings of combat. To fire, move the mouse over a friendly ship until its label blinks, then move it over an enemy ship until its label blinks, then click the left mouse button.
It's just the very start of combat, so the "laser fire" is unlimited, very plain-looking, always hits, does no damage, and passes through planets (I guess it's a meson laser
). It's still a technical test rather than a game - a way to make sure that everything works on other PCs before getting too deep into it. Please let me know if you encounter any bugs/crashes.
If you're feeling adventurous, the number and positions of ships can be changed by editing ScenarioShips.dat (it's a plain text file) in the data folder, but be careful since the documentation is minimal and there's no error checking. Eventually a scenario editor will make more options like this possible, with better presentation than editing a text file by hand.
