5 weapon myths from the movies

And Gojira! Giant flying turtles with flames shooting out their rears!

So who here has ever run a game in Traveller with kaiju in it? C'mon, honesty please? I have, with giant atomic reptiles. On a planet that no longer exists in my game...I mean that its location was lost to the Scout Service generations ago.

I haven't, *yet*, but the campaign I'll be starting shortly will be after a huge psychic event that caused the deaths of 90% of the sophants in the "nearby" (larger than the campaign area) galaxy. Part of this energy created creatures out of legend. On the 12 worlds of the Confederation (the homeland of our heroes), elves and such were created (except on one world, where demons were created, which are only slightly better than elves).

When the characters finally get to Neo-Tokyo, all sorts of things will have been created, including Kaiju and Mutant Ninja Color-Flavored Rangers and Magic Girl heroines. I will admit that TL-13 weapons probably take care of Kaiju better than the old 20th century ones do. :)

Gojira: the original RPFC (Reptile Portable Fusion Cannon).

Science Fantasy in State College, PA.

I used to bullseye womp rats in my T-16 back home, they're not much bigger than two meters.

:)

Wonderful!!

As a guy who lives in the UK, I can't explain to you how disturbing it is for me to read the phrase 'my wife has one (the S&W) as her car gun...'. My wife drives 100 miles somewhere, I show my concern by topping up the oil and handing her her cell phone in case she gets a flat. But then I'm lucky enough to live in a society where she isn't going to get car jacked I suppose.

It's actually not all that dangerous here, some people just like guns.

Is it a myth that people from Texas all ride horses and carry firearms? I drive a mustang and I definitly carry a firearm. I also live in texas. Mithras I had no idea that the UK was so safe. That is really awesome. I wonder if crime would go down in the US if Texans would all go unarmed.

This table was derived from data found here (not by me): http://rds.homeoffice.gov.uk/rds/pdfs09/hosb1109chap2new.xls

2007: All violent crime
USA - 20.4/1000 adults
UK - ~48/1000 adults (480/10,000 adults)

Of course, there are differences in what is counted and how it is counted, for example the US includes rape but not other sexual assaults, while the UK includes all sexual assaults, but in general.....

Yes, but the UK's still dealing with brownies and elves. They're far more menacing than most people suspect. I think DDT took care of most of that here, some decades back.

I believe the topic was weapon myths?

Yes, we were... and the weapon myth here is:
Banning (or even highly restricting) personal ownership of firearms makes for a safer and less violent society.

{edit: Actually, the myth is broader, since it originated centuries before widespread firearms possession... the myth is:
Banning (or even highly restricting) personal ownership of any particular weapon or indeed weapons in general makes for a safer and less violent society.}

Humans are humans, and if they want to hurt someone they WILL find a way to do so, and whether a particular weapon is easy or hard to obtain has exactly NO effect on that reality!

Nor does it have any real effect on the tendency of members of any particular society to act violently, as that data shows!

{If they don't have guns they will use knives, if they don't have knives they will use clubs.

If they don't have clubs they will use rocks, bricks, or even their own fists, hands, and feet!

The contra-myth (reality) is that the only way to reduce violence is to address why the humans want to commit the violent act in the first place!

This is directly applicable to Traveller in terms of Law Levels/weapons restrictions and government types.

Your character will be just as at-risk (if not more so) in a LL-9 society as in a LL-0 society... and perhaps at less risk in the "wide-open" society because at least now he has a chance to defend himself, and will be expecting and ready for the possibility of armed violence.}
