Alternative Maintance and Lifesupport Costs

renski

SOC-1
My players have failed and died in their attempt to defend their non-jump capable TL9 world against the evil VioSyth mutant alien cyberborgs, and now im coming up with the next campaign in the same setting.

I figure a group of Oculans (IMTU, Oculus was attacked with nukes, not hit by a drunk shuttle pilot), of which the characters are part will be attempting steal a experimental 2,000 dTon TL-10 / Jump capable ship built from captured technology to escape the oppression of the conquering forces.

This ship has a long way to travel in some largely hostile and/or empty space and will easily extend past its normal maintenance and life support monthly requirements. What could my players do to extend the life of the ship?

Maintenance can be solve by filling the ship's hold with spare parts to repair the system degradation mentioned on page 128 of the CRB.

How about life support? Im thinking they'll need food of somekind (either trade good food, or stacks of rations) and water (74Cr per ton based on Ice from Belt Strike), but that doesnt cover the 2,000 (or 1,500 when doubling up) life support costs.

Im trying to think of something they could purchase, preferably a trade good (either a generic type or a sub type from merchant prince) that would be a consumable to replace the non-food/water element of the life support costs.

Any thoughts would be welcome,

ta,

Renski

The L/S costs also include top-ups to air tanks, changing of filters, emptying of waste tanks, parts for all of the above, as well as general upkeep so new bedding, broken furntiture, plates, lost knoves and forks. Not all of the Cr2000 is direct bits, lots of it will be service charges to dump your waste, or flush your air system.

It might also include various chemical inhibitors introduced into the L/S to minimise fungal and mold growth, prevent corrosion and scent the air "aah! pine fresh".

My life support charges also covers any per-person charges and/or fees levied by the destination system's customs inspectors.
