• Welcome to the new COTI server. We've moved the Citizens to a new server. Please let us know in the COTI Website issue forum if you find any problems.
  • We, the systems administration staff, apologize for this unexpected outage of the boards. We have resolved the root cause of the problem and there should be no further disruptions.

And now for something completely different...

There's a known problem with the reader software on the Kindle Fire; it seems that not all Kindle- or Mobipocket-format books that were readable on the earlier products are readable by the Fire.

FWIW, I believe that the Nook Color is down to $199 from B&N (the Nook Tablet is $249, and reportedly doesn't take the N2A card), or less if you get one used on eBay, and the N2A cards run from $40 to $100, IIRC. You only really need the larger cards if you intend to download a lot of video and audio; even the smallest of the cards gives you enough space for a good selection of anti-boredom apps plus a decent library.

I keep my NookColor's brightness set pretty low, and it's still damn good even in ordinary office lighting. For using it outdoors, though, I need to set it higher. Battery life is pretty good.

eInk is great in any light you could read a real book in - and better than back-lit in bright lights - and they make a plug-in light for reading in the dark. Plus a Kindle is cheaper to replace if you drop or puke over it! But experiment and find what's best for you.

No question about that; the issue then becomes whether you can reasonably do anything else on your eInk device - they're typically "strictly readers" with maybe one or two games like Sudoku or Chess to serve as an alternative to Utter Boredom.

For pure reading, yeah, I'd go with an eInk device, no question. I still have my original Nook, and occasionally use it that way. For a cheap near-alternative to an iPad or a laptop computer? Nope, give me an designed Android tablet, or something like the NookColor+N2A, instead.

New blog post up. Hopefully once I get "comfortable" with the routine and effects of the chemo treatments I'm planning on getting back to work. I'd really like to get a new setting out there as a baseline for SciFi20. I've got a rough idea I've been working on that I've kind of code named "D&D in Space". It's a play on the (surprisingly few) cat calls we received when T20 was announced, but in a way it owes its concept to the basic dungeon crawl idea. I'll post something about things on my forums on the other site if anyone is interested in working with me as a sounding board for ideas. I might be slow in responding over the next few days though, so bear with me.

Hunter, have you considered an RSS feed of the cancer related posts on your blog? If so, could you have a feed here?

And, yes, play all the cards you can. My biggest regret growing up in Alaska is that I literally don't know any of my indirect line relatives.

It's been a few weeks since we last heard something. Considering the circumstances I am almost afraid to ask if there are news. :(

I'm holding out hope it's just the chemo. It can be really rough sometimes. Like all that matters in life is holding down breakfast while hoping you can look forward to something better in life someday.

I'm still hoping for the best, here.

Hunter, you don't know me (I'm a Minister and my wife used to be a cancer nurse), but just to say I'm following and praying from across The Pond. Prayers are not hindered by distance... Wishing you strength and peace in the present.

Nearly two months without news, nor here nor on his blog.

I'm afraid to ask, but is treatment going well? Is he feeling better?

Glad to know. Send him my best wishes if you contact him.
