But knock off a Megacorp freighter, the Counts personal treasure ship or just start getting greedy, then expect the IN to drop by and stomp on you hard. The same also applies if the pirates start shooting up passengers, blowing up ships, etc. Once the losses caused by a problem exceeds the cost of removing the problem - measures will be taken.

As you point out, we all, myself very much included, tend to over-think the situation.

I don't know why I forgot to post this link earlier. It's Walt Smith's excellent economic analysis of just what a pirate needs to make his "nut".

How does grabbing one ship's boat, selling it for 24% of list, and getting enough money to cover all the operational costs for the classic 400tn Nishemani-class corsair for more than a year sound?

It would make it even more tough -- by adding one important factor -- IMTU, no jumping, thus, it's even harder to find a port w/ a fense to sell your ill-gotten goods ..

which is why pirates have to even more ruthless, sneaky -- and are most likely flying a military vessel and use an excuse of say .. a customs check

and one can't be sued in court if there are no witnesses ..
