Are we asking for trouble or are we asking for help?

Hi,

I once had an idea for trying to set up an ATU where first contact for Earth occurs by accident when a ship from one side involved in an interstellar cold war stumbles across us. Because of the cold war setting I figured that maybe a kind of semi-advanced planet with some manufacturing capabilities etc, like Earth might be more valuable as a potential trade partner and/or ally to someone in the cold war rather than getting involved in minor side war/invasion of Earth etc.
Kind of a rework of Star Trek TOS episode "A Private Little War"?

:D

Not so sure. 100s-1000s of people abducted every year, cows too. Makes you wonder what they think the more intelligent of the two are...

Are you sure we'll like the answer?

have run both Teenagers From Outer Space and Hunter Planet, I suspect any actual alien abductions are not governmental programs. Think "Frat Boyz from Outer Space."

Hi,

I was mostly thinking that if we made contact with a society involved in a cold war it could maybe be mutually beneficial for the Earth and this other society if they were to maybe transfer some technology to us to help us set up in system travel, mining, and maybe even some semi-advanced manufacturing facilities in exchange for us becoming a trade partner with them.

That way we could benefit from an infusion from new technology and extra-solar trade while they would benefit from us providing the manpower and such need to due the dirty work/manual labor needed for the mining and refining of the raw resources in our system and turning them into stuff of use to them that we can use in trade.

Mostly my thoughts were that if the alien society were in a cold war the benefits of having an enlarged base for resources and trade and manpower that could be gained through a mutually beneficial teaming may be of more use to this alien society than if they were to try and take them be force, as some theories about possible alien contact may suggest would be the likely outcome if an advanced race were to encounter us.

Assuming a cold war between aliens? Maybe it could and would benefit Earth (for a while anyway), BUT, Which side do we take? How would we know the "real deal"? Would we intentionally or inadvertently back the wrong side?

Could our "help" to one side so unbalance the power struggle that an intergalactic cold war turned "Hot"?

Once that "Hot" war was won, are we then back to being the next victim?

Hi,

Trying not to cross any lines on politics or anything, but I suspect that there probably have been a fair number of situations in our world's history where a country, duchy, or city-state etc has been in a similar situation. :)

I'm going to risk that tightrope walk and agree with you.

Like Thailand in the mid to late 1800's with Britain encroaching from Burma and France from Vietnam/Combodia. They chose the 3rd party - the US.

Some years ago I read a short story, I think it was in Asimov's, where a space traveling group showed up and started destroying all of Earth's religious buildings. Another group, different solar system than the first group, shows up and starts attacking the first group.

A policeman, who some Earth people decide is more of a game warden, arrives and gets rid of the first two groups.

Earth people sigh with relief and start rebuilding.

One of the main characters mention something like 'what is going to happen when opposing fleets show up and use this solar system as a battle ground ?'
