My premise.
A long time ago in a far off part of the galaxy a race discovered the secret of psionics. They sought to colonise the galaxy by sending STL 'spores' to every part of the galaxy, these spores were designed to interact with any suitable organic material and grant them psionic potential.
[Research Station Gamma shows that Imperial science has identified psionic potential in many organisms both plant and animal, smart and dumb across many different worlds - this time the Ancients didn't do it]
On a remote pastoral world the native Chirpers were one such species that evolved from psionic potential infected biota... then comes Grandfather.
Grandfather bioengineered and psi-engineered the Chirpers, creating the Droyne. His children and grandchildren likewise modified Chirpers into their own Droyne.
After the Ancients war many Droyne worlds regressed to Chirper, lacking the psionic triggers necessary to stimulate the Droyne metamorphosis. Grandfather gifted some Chirper worlds with the Coynn ceremony to maintain a Droyne population, however some Droyne worlds had established rituals of their own devising to maintain the great change from Chirper to Droyne.

The secret
Every Droyne is tied into a local area psionic network that stores their memories and can grant access to ancestral memories with the correct triggers - every Droyne is in effect a recording device. Grandfather - and any of his surviving offspring if MgT SotA is to be considered canon - periodically sends servants or even personally visits Droyne worlds in order to download the last few centuries worth of data.
Grandfather seeks to understand the nature of the entities that seeded space with psionic potential, he seeks to understand the Empress Wave, he seeks greater understanding of the advanced civilisations that existed long before his era and those that have risen to greatness since, he seeks understanding of jump space entities...
