Don't count humans out when it comes to shedding, and I imagine Hivers and Droyne would slough skin too. And skin cells would create a lovely bacteriological infested slime where they accumulate and fester. May be part of the stink everyone seems to attribute to scout ships.
Ships today require a lot of cleaning, mostly because of all the nooks and crannies. Occasionally it requires "blowing down the overheads" to remove the dust that accumulates in the exposed wiring and pipes. Seems like this could/would/should apply to Trav ships too.
Maybe there's a day of "spring cleaning" when they don vacc suits, set internal grav to zero, blow down the spaces with compressed air, and expose the whole mess to hard vacuum to dump it over the side.
