Box set question

Jacqual

SOC-12
I got myself a copy of the first printing box set in a box even, not in good shape mind you box has tape on it and is worn. But it only had books 1 to 3 in it with nothing else. I'm not worried about missing dice but was there anything else in that set?

You mean the original 1977 version?
I'm not sure if it had dice in it, the old memory doesn't fare well over a period of 30 years, but ISTR there was a pink booklet, a games catalogue I think. When I can remember where I put it, I'll have a look, it should all still be together.

There were no dice that I can remember. At most there was a GDW postcard to request a product catelog or some such but that was it.

And to verify that it is a first edition (of which there were a number of print runs, BTW), check the description of the Type C Cruiser for fitted subcraft. If it says Cutters, you don't have a first edition.

My original Boxed set, received for Christmas 1979, did not include dice. It had the three books and a return postcard that basically got you on their mailing list.

No dice in the original 3 LBB set. Not in the second edition either.

If it was the second edition I think it had a map of the Spinward Marches and the LBB 0 Introduction to Traveller book, too.

I remember saving my pocket money for weeks to get my little black boxed set, way back in the day.

IIRC, not even the deluxe edition had dice included. It was starter edition Traveller that included 2 dice.

I sold my original boxed set with books 1-6 over ten years ago and had to fight tooth and nail to buy another set, a battered acquisition. Then finally got a near mint copy (cost me A$80). The box does fit all nine LBB's within if you top to tail them.

Mine had a New Games insert that's still in the box. It warns of price increases coming on June 1, 1977. I have a pair of green translucent dice in the box. Thay've been in there so long I truly can't remember if they came with it. It's possible I put them in there, I used to carry a campaign in the box as well (I bought a 'deep throat' stapler just to make my own digest-sized campaign books.) Now it's books 1-3, the GDW insert, and the dice.

I suppose Marc could tell us if the earliest boxes went out with dice in them. I bought mine within a month of release (possibly in the first week.) I can't place where the dice might have come from otherwise, though its possible they're from a Pacheesi set or something.

Hmmm, interesting. Both my deluxe editions are the large rule book format not individual books 1-3. I wonder if that has any bearing on the "no dice" issue :)

Hi,

Mine is definitely second edition, it says so and has copyright dates 1977, 1981,
so it looks like I started playing in 1981.

I have red, white, blue, green and black dice in my box, but I think I added them later to quickly roll stats.

I think my map wore out, I definiely remember having one, but it's no longer there...

Regards

David

You got Deluxe Starter!

Seriously, the dice were nothing exciting. The same, cheap, white with shallow black pips, 12mm dice that matched my (later acquired) GDW boxed wargames.

Well I checked it is a first printing the Type C cruiser has 2x Pinnace in it mind my spelling. No mention of a cutter in the ship description :)

My boxed games from GDW had dice. Now that I think about it, all my boxed RPGs came with dice except for MegaTraveller. GDW used the same boring white dice in all their games. In a way, it was all good because they all matched. The last game I got was either The New Era or Twilight 2000 2nd edition that still had dice.

Well, I've spent two days worth of spare time looking for my Traveller and Striker boxed sets and had no luck so far. There's an empty space in the cupboard where they ought to be, and it's just the right size for two boxes, but I have no idea where or when I last used them, or why they weren't returned. :(

Which probably means they'll turn up in about 2 years time when I get my arm twisted to tidy the spare room (Dunno why it needs tidying more than once a decade, but ours is not to reason why... ;) )

However, it looks like help has already been provided, so I'll just go away and try to ignore the griping questions in my head about the vanishing LBBs...
