Casting Strephon

Ooh tricky. But previous dodgy emperors have been played by:

John Hurt (Caligula)
Christopher Biggins (Nero)
Max von Sydow (Ming)
Ian McDiarmid (Palpatine)
Peter Ustinov (Nero)
Malcolm McDowell (Caligula)
Rod Steiger (Napoleon)
John Wayne (Gengis Khan)
Peter Jurasik (Mollari)
Michael Wisher (Davros)

Malcolm Mcdowell would make a great Lucan. But Mollari seems more Strephon like to me.

This one's coming a little out of leftfield.

David Threlfall who plays Frank Gallagher in the British comedy drama series Shameless. He's played some stunning roles in the past but the one that made me think of Strephon is when he played the Emperor Constantine in the docudrama Ancient Rome.

I saw that episode. He was brilliant.

In hoc signo vinces, indeed. :)

Revise that to 1882.

It is an unusual name (which I wanted to use for second son, but my wife called dibs on naming son#2), and I often wonder where the folks at GDW picked it up from. I guess Iolanthe is the obvious choice.

That being said, I know of an earlier occurrence. One of my favorite musicians from the early 18thC had a song wherein there is a character named Strephon. If you click here, and scroll down to song #11 (Weep All Ye Nymphs) you can here a bit.

Spinward,

Actually, Strephon may have been the choice.

The Strephon/Iolanthe question came up during a recent thread about the Kinunirs and black globes. Oddly enough, Iolanthe is mentioned first in canon, not Strephon.

Of course, GDW could have had Strephon's name in hand well before it actually appeared in print, but Iolanthe's name was published first.

Weird, huh?

Bill

Iolanthe (mis-scanned as Lolanthe) appears in 79 in Adv 1 as does Strephon. pp. 41
