Aramis, got to thank you again. I've been playing for 4 days solid now and I'm still "harmless."

Best of all, the source code is open, there are a couple of ship design sequences (simple vector design plus whatever textures you care to apply.

With a bit of thought and effort I can see Scouts, Free Traders, Mercenary Cruisers populating the elite galaxy.

I'm a huge fan of the Starflight games; there are a few Spemin-licious races on the frontier of MTU and I even built a CT version of the Starflight scout ship.

Some other games that affected the feel of MTU were Crusader: No Remorse and Crusader: No Regret (for the corporate solo action) and Fallout I and II (gotta love all those muties!). Both KOTOR's and HALO's also have left an impression.

What? No Homeworld love? EVE Online?

Also potential worthiness in the upcoming Sword of the Stars. Not to mention all its 4X predecessors (Master of Orion, etc.); Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords is a huge (surprise) hit right now.

There's not a huge abundance of great scifi flavor in PC games, but it is there for the finding.

"Homeworld" big inspiration for me, especially in the look and feel of the ships.

"Master of Orion" added inspiration for alien design on a point buy.

"Stellar Crusade" was also an inspiration, I think SSI put it out, not quite sure.

Better still, I found oolite on the Elite site.

I started on Elite on an Apple II... wireframes... Oh, how I DON'T miss 'em.
