Crucis Margin timeline question

In GURPS Traveller's Alien Races 2 book, there's a minor race called the "Intelligence", found in a system in Crucis Margin called "Devi".

And of course, there's no such system that I can find in the Gateway Domain.

Ideas? Thoughts? C-accelerated thrown rocks?

Of course, since GT is a total mess of previous canon stuff and new ideas mixed in. I think it devalues the range for me. YMMV.

You did know GT is a separate branch?

Do you have the Judges Guild version of the Crucis Margin sector? It may be easier to find Devi there.

AR2 was written long before QuickLink published the Gateway Domain book, and I know they redid all (or much) of the star locations and world names. It may help to assume the older Judges Guild material is canon rather than the Gateway Domain.

AR2 also says the Devi is within the K'kree sphere of influence, but Gateway domain says there are no such worlds. (Neither does the Judges Guild material).

According to AR2 Devi UWP should be E7676xx-0, So I offer some suggested worlds:
</font><blockquote>code:</font><hr /><pre style="font-size:x-small; font-family: monospace;">Orsu 0619 B766555-C Ag 702 Xx K4 V
Mangots 0911 D769663-B Ni 201 Xx G6 V
Taginae 2008 E666040-0 600 Xx M2 V
Amya 1434 B769586-5 Ni 800 Xx M2 V
Sluiskin 2010 B767559-B Ag 622 Xx F4 V
Oconee 2232 D869443-8 Ni 202 Xx G6 V</pre>
Thus far Taginae is my favorite for matching the description of Devi. Depending upon how far from the Canon description of Devi you want to go, there may be other worlds that fit your criteria.

The other GURPS "missing world" is Otrai, from GURPS: Humaniti. G:H has Otrai in a specific hex location in the Glimmerdrift Reaches (I think in subsector I), but this hex does not correlate to a world in Gateway to Destiny.

Then again, Devi and Otrai can really be dropped in pretty much anywhere "on the fringes of Imperial space" since they don't greatly affect (or are affected by) the worlds around them. On the other hand, I _do_ like the moral quandry it leaves the K'kree in when trying to decide whether the Devi are vegetarians or not.

Cheers!

Maybe moving both Devi and Otrai is the answer. And I didn't find them in the Judges Guild stuff either. My bet is that someone just thought "Crucis Margin - no one has anything there, I'll stick my idea there".

That's what's most annoying about trying to maintain consistency between universes. At least the Gateway Domain material is fully wrapped around the MTJ #4 material, rather than trying to pretend it doesn't exist.

Moving the Devi to Kaa G!'kul sector (one sector to trailing) would work, as it now makes them fall within the K'kree sphere of influence per the description.

According to my copy of Gateway Domain there is a world at 0329: Khamkhabu 0329 C3235AB-A Ni Po 114 Xx M1 V A9 D

I doubt it is the world described in GT:Humaniti, but it would be less of a handwave than the Devi.

Well I suppose the Old Worlds missed the Kafoe being a couple sectors over from them a "lost" minor race such as the Devi wouldn't be too hard to accept. Or will it.

The GURPS book describes the year 1120, Gateway to Destiny describes 993, and in 993 the Lords of Thunder (renegade K'Kree) were busy encroaching on the right hand side of the map. So I decided they conquered and renamed "Devi" sometime in the interim. I figure it would be in or around the Mercantile Concord. If you want to put the Devi in a game, pick something around there with a suitable UWP and go for it.

Weren't the Devi a recycled SpaceMaster race? My GURPS Traveller books are half a planet away now, but I seem to recall a lot of the SpaceMaster races as being very un-Traveller...

YMMV,

Yes. David Pulver wrote a number of Traveller "alien races" many years ago. He sent them to GDW for publication, but GDW said "not right now." ICE was looking for freelance works a short time later, so David, being the enterprising young writer, sent them over there where they were published for SpaceMaster.

Fast forward a decade or so, and David is contracted to write/edit the GURPS Traveller Alien Races book. To fill the page count, and add some interesting material to these book, he adds his original alien races, since published in SpaceMaster. So they've come full circle.

While generally I liked the AR books the additional Pulver races are almost all placed with no regard to OTU canon or even logic.

The Tezcat are probably the worst offenders with a pocket empire in the Reft sector that contradicts previous UWP's and makes no sense whatsover given that their worlds are too far apart to interact at their stated tech level.

Also way too many dino races in the series...

I agree too. I enjoy the GT Alien races books but the Pulver races seem way out way out of place for Traveller.

Interesting looking over the responses on this topic, as I didn't like the Pulver races when they were published for the GT books...

And I didn't like them as Spacemaster races either.

So, for now, perhaps the answer is to ignore them. They certainly aren't significant contributors to anyone's Traveller Timeline (the main reason I asked).

I think what I'll do is stick with QLI material for the Gateway Quadrant, ignoring contradictions from other non-GDW/DGP sources.

(Yes, this means I'm adding the QLI/Avenger material to the timeline, up through 1115 at least. I still haven't decided to add Rebellion/Virus/4th Imp material. No, I don't know when I'll finish.)

They were spacemaster races? Explain, please.

What's your feeling about the Luriani as depicted in GURPS Humaniti? Though I haven't used it that deeply, I tapped it basically to get some more material on the mindset of some Luriani PCs.

It's been a while since this thread was posted to. Any progress?

</font>
See my explination above. They were published in Aliens and Artifacts in 1991

And no progress on the Gateway front. I keep meaning to get to it. It's always "next" on the list.
