CT LBB2: Beam vs Pulse Laser

Maladominus

SOC-14 1K
Hi all,

In a purely CT game, just what is the performance difference between a Beam Laser and Pulse Laser?

LBB2 states that beam lasers are more accurate, but also says that pulse lasers tend to do more damage. HUH? There is no goddam table in Book 2 that actually tells me that Beam Lasers have a better "To Hit" modifier.

Was there an LBB2 errata (second edition, 1981 GDW) that I missed somewhere?

thanks for any enlightening answers

That sounds like a reasonable distinction. But where can I verify what you just posted? What page in LBB2 is it in? thanks

I....can't find it!

We have been using that for so long I just assumed it was in the book!

Then again I am just getting over the stomach flu so perhaps I am just missing it.

The distinction is clear in book 5. A given number of beam lasers has a higher beam weapon factor (and are thus more accurate), while pulse lasers give a -2 on the damage tables (and are thus more lethal).

It's not stated in Book 2; it is stated, however, in the Starter Traveller Rules Booklet, page 40, under "Laser Fire; Pulse Lasers":

A pulse laser fires with a DM of -1 to hit; however, if it hits the target suffers two damage rolls instead of one.
I think this also made it into The Traveller Book, but I'm not sure.
