D&D like Char-Gen for Traveller?

That's pretty interesting. It would also depend on the skill as well. Using a firearm in self defense is pretty much a matter of having good aim and, to be blunt, the guts to pull the trigger. Using that weapon in a firefight is a skill level or two above the self defense scenario. But, using the child soldier example, I can see a pre-teen being able to handle something like an ACR (say the pulse rifle from Aliens), but he (or she) may not have the training to field strip that weapon.

I'm not advocating kids in combat for Traveller, but I think kids in other support roles is doable; engineering apprentice, pilot in training, navigator apprentice, nurse's aid, and so forth. Definitely skill-0 territory, and with an adventure or two, perhaps skill-1.

aramis; I guess things have changed since I did D&D.

Coolness under fire - the best trait ever added to a game and then hastily removed. Aftermath has a series of talent secondary characteristics which were used to generate skill base numbers, combatative was one such talent.[/aside]

I have a hack for 5ED&D:
D&D characteristics + Edu + Soc
Enter CT career pathway system of your choice to generate Traveller skills
HD - if ground combat arm d10; if military/scout d8; if civilian d6
Terms served = starting level
That's the start of it.

To me the reason our base combat number to hit when nice controlled shooting ranges suggest an easier chance is ALL about combat nerves and anxiety.

IMO skill increases assume that trait is developed, along with better fire/ammo discipline and more accuracy.
