Densitometer range

In the T20 book, Densitometer ranges have a base of one meter. From the text, that seems to be base penetration of the ground, which can be increased.
My question is, how far away from the ground does the sensor have to be? What is the range to target?

Base range for the densitometer is actually 5 kilometers, according to the latests errata, which you can download from the electronic library of Travellerrpg.com.
