Device to simulate Tasks

I am looking for a device in which players can see a countdown for a particular tasks as heurstic device to improve play.

I could use an small hourglass but that is not programmable. I could use an egg timer but that is rather lame. I have seen digital LED timers but they are way too expensive. Ideally something futuristic as this is Traveller afterall. Can anyone help with a cheap alternative that is readily aviable?

I wrote a timer for my phone. anyone w/a Windows Mobile phone and some basic .net knowledge could do it, even using interesting Traveller-style fonts. If you've a WinMob phone, let me know & I'll update it to have a count-down timer, maybe add some Traveller-esque stuff to it.

Edit: turns out the fonts are quite limited...but you could add static images.

Or any smart phone: most use Java I think, so it should not be hard. Should being a relative term, of course!

That would be cool...if I had a mobile phone (please do not highjack the thread). So I am looking for something more mechanical or electronic...if LED can be considered electronic.

...but they are way too expensive.

Define "way too expensive" or even propose a price range :)

Otherwise we're just shooting in the dark.

For example, this timer sounds ideal to me for your needs and is reasonably priced. You get big display, compact design, a built in stand, countdown and up, with voice! For only US$20 plus s&h.

That is not bad...if the shipping to Toronto doesn't send the item over the top. However, things that I was looking at range 60-90 US$ plus s&h.

timer

I found a digital timer that goes for up to 90 minutes in my local dollar store. You might want to check there if any are in your area
