Did you say "Imperial" Navy, sonny?

The Duke of Regina's huscarles are composed of "marine veterans or temporary assignments," the latter being Imperial Marines seconded to the Duke's service.

I don't recall if non-Imperial marines are mentioned explicitly, but they are strongly implied by Mercenary and they exist in my TU, associated with systems with planetary or colonial navies. They don't always go by the name "marine": naval security, space infantry, star legionary are all "marines" for purposes of character generation.

The first few pages of Book 4 make it pretty clear that not all Marines are Imperial Marines.

I've always considered that Army was a local outfit of some sort. The Imperium has no standing army, only the Marines which are comparatively few in number.

If there's a war the Imperium levies the Armies of member planets. That's the only time an Army character will have left his home system in chargen.

So, during the Fifth Frontier War, it's only colonial army troops hacking it out on the border, dropped into some hell hole to hold out against the Zho mind f#%kers?

Hmm....

I can see both sides. Your take makes some sense, and it would certainly explain why there aren't any "Imperial Army Bases" mentioned on the starmaps.

Then, there's the other side that says that there aren't any Marine Bases mentioned on the maps either--are ya gonna say that Marines aren't attached to the Naval Bases?

I, personally, have always been of a mind that some large Naval Bases include Imperial Army barracks as well.

Farther down the Traveller food chain, GURPS Traveller (the first reference that came to mind was GT Ground Forces) certainly disagrees with you to an extent. That book postulates coordinated world armies, as you've proposed, but those forces are subject to the Imperial Army, which is commanded at the subsector level.

Besides, as I look at my home subsector, the Aramis subsector, I don't see a single world that can produce an Imperial Army TL 15 Grav Tank.

My take would be that an "Imperial Army" does exist.

Well, as far as book 4 went, I thought it was always implicit that some soldier's careers would be in non-Imperial militaries.

I never once created such a character, though.
Ooooh, I did (though he was Army, not Marine). He was from a non-Imperial realm that lay hidden out of the way.
