CT Only: Differences between Starter Traveller, The Traveller Book and the LBBs?

What are the differences between Starter Traveller, The Traveller Book and the LBBs? Does anyone have a concise list of those? The only difference I know about is that Starter has range-band rather than vector space combat and no ship construction rules.

Starter does have ship construction rules. Pages 10 and 11 in the forms and charts booklet, pages 31 to 35 in the rulebook.

It is also the only place you find the pulse laser rules.

What it lacks are the rules for drugs and the experience section.

The Traveller book has a lot more stuff about running a game and campaign.

I penciled in the pulse laser rules into my copy of The Traveller Book.

I think I also fixed the UWP hydrographics generation error that had crept in.

The Traveller Book is hardcover, is in print, and is $20. Get all your players to buy their copy from drive thru if you're all interested in playing Classic Traveller. The book has illustrations of the ships and personal weapons. Anyway, all your players will have the same version of the rules this way.

Not sure what you are looking at, but my copy of Starter Traveller has ship design rules.

There is not that much difference between the three sets of rules, but check the errata thoroughly, and watch the Hydrographic calculation error. Starter is also available through DriveThruRPG.

I own TTB (bought when there was only Traveller, not its many versions), but I've never seen Starting Traveller.

As you describe it, Starter Traveller seems more thought for the players, while TTB for the referees...

If you have TTB, Starter Traveller is almost exactly the same material and illustrations, organized in the same ways.

The only major difference is the "range band space combat" system, and missing a few things like Drugs and Experience pages.

Starter includes "Mission on Mithril" instead of "Exit Visa", but both have "Shadows". Starter does not have Regina Subsector data, but it does have the Sample Patrons.

The coolest part of Starter Traveller is that they have collected ALL the tables into a single book - very handy as a reference during play. My old TTB almost falls open to the combat and chargen spreads, and this is a whole book full of those sorts of things.

Only thing I know is that the LBBs are very incomplete when compared to Starter Traveller. If I was to buy a set for playing I would get Starter Traveller. The LBBs miss out loads of info on actually playing, they miss out Patrons entirely, loads of combat rules like cover etc that are in Starter Traveller, plus loads more. I ended up pasting so much into my LBB set it would have been better to just buy the Starter Set. The only thing the later LBBs are better for is the vector space combat rules.

I seem to recall Starter having the drugs mentioned, and XP too. But I'd have to check.

I have the LBBs 1-3 (in one book) reprint at hand. So should I buy the PoD version of TTB and/or print out the Starter Traveller PDFs I have?

Well you can download the Starter Edition for free from DriveThru.

My POD copy of TTB hasn't arrived yet but as soon as it does I'll comment on it.

Depends if you want a hardcover edition of the rules. It's only $20 + shipping in the US. And tax probably, if I remember.

It depends.

There are a number of rewordings versus the 1981 printings of CT. Small differences in combat and healing rules. I remember that because S4 quoted from LBB's, and I quoted from TTB, and they didn't match.

There is, in TTB, in the section Wounding and Death, a whole extra paragraph of example that's not in Bk1, but is in TTB and ST.

TTB and ST have sections entitled Typical Actions and Weapons Usage in between the sections Morale and Combat Equipment. Weapons Usage is interesting because it includes official adaptations to 1.5m grid play.

TTB has Rifle vs Combat at -5, Bk 1 at -4, ST at -5.

Lots of little bits like those.

Not saying this isn't so...I just don't remember. I usually default to TTB. So, where did I quote from the LBBs? I'm sure I did. I just can't place what you're referencing.
