Far Future gadgets (and toys for the rich)

3D, Surround Sound, Smell-A-Vision.

You insert the fragrance strip/DVD into the console and enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of real life action movies.
The Sea, The pine forest, , feilds of wild flowers, Orange groves and spring rains (and wet dog, blood, decaying bodies, and horse poo) now come into your home.

They already got that at Disney. I thought we were talking about Far Future gadgets.

An interesting device would be a portable fusion reactor that turns lead into gold. Some shuckster can land on a primitive planet, and plug the portable heavy ion collider into the Ship's reactor, and after about an hours worth of work at full power, the salesman turns a tiny amount of lead into gold and tries to sell the gadget to a local chieftain, then he unplugs the thing from his ship and takes off.

Another fun gadget is the gravivator. Imagine an elevator with grav plates built in, these grav plates are in the ceiling and the floor and can turn on and off instantly while quickly whipping the passengers to the right floor.

Zero-G Accessorization? Tech 12+, cost ranging from trinkets of cr50-100 to designer items in the thousands.

Miniaturized CG nodes embedded in jewellry or clothing, powered by batteries or the body's own residual electricity; bangles and necklaces that orbit the wrists, ankles and neck; hairpins that hover meters above the head, allowing the weightless construction of elaborate, massive hairdos.

Such items are generally available in Duty-Free shops in any A or B starport; however they are available in bulk at discounts for merchants: the far future's answer to "Glass Beads And Trinkets For The Natives"

If the covers of Sci-Fi pulp novels are anything to go by, indeed if the streets of New York and LA are anything to go by, there will always be demand for contra-grav brassieres (and implants.) I'm just thinking out loud here, folks...

What about medicines, or genetic alteration, to restore hair, remove obesity, change hair colors permanently (or on a whim for the gala this evening), male and female enhancements ;) , male facial-hair/female leg-hair removal?

Oh yes, how many blades will the razor of the 22th+ century contain? Maybe that age old question will get modified from "how many angels can dance on the head of a pin" to "how many razor blades can shave from the head of a pin"? :D Maybe it will be an energy type "razor"? "Try the new Turbo Neutrino-Pumped-Lazor Razor from Gilletti".

I was thinking about this earlier. Every character is perfect? Except for Gurps, all other published incarnations of Traveller have no disadvantages or hindrances for a player to add flavor, and get some minor benefit from, to his character. I might do this for my T20 campaign that may soon start up. For example, a character can choose some sort of baldness, and gain some benefit (extra feat, ability score addition, or skill points) that can be offset by taking a regular dosage of some over-the-counter remedy (in other words, a way to soak off some cash from the character

).

Hmmm. There's the memory paint/ plastics industries that come along at TL-7+. An example of changining one's nail colors we see in the movie Total recall with the secretary at the Virtual Vacation business idly using a pen like wand (which stores the colors/patterns in a small computer chip probably) to change her fingernail painted patterns.

Likewise, in the rare Traveller Fiction to date, (one of the GDW-TNE-Mr. Bruner novels), a former RC turned Guild raider captain is seen taking a TL-15 nanite solution that altered her cheekbones and facial tissues to avoid easy recognition in a mtter of hours.

If they made such for just altering one's face, it stands to reason one could also do complete body-sculpting that way without invasive surgery.

As for enhancements, the best of the TML had several decent articles covering plastic surgery, cloning, & the use of nanites (industrially/medically) in traveller-scaled tech tables IIRC.

In fiction, the Simon Deathstalker series recently had examples of high-tech body-sculpting by the powerfully idle nobility in that Empire, as well as autodoc like regeneration/ rejuvenation machinery.

Not to be too crude, but has anyone mentioned the ever popular girlfriend-android?

Now THAT's a Christmas gift... or whatever holiday you prefer

You know, I was tempted make the Starchaser reference, but begged off because I wasn't sure how many people had seen the film.

But yes. A femmbot

Out of context slightly in that regard, in the Serenity RPG, there is reference to the 'Love Bot', (gender to order by customer, & batteries not included)--ala what the movie portrayed to us.

Now as to Traveller Robots..allow me to steer you towards our own CoTI author of Stellar fanzine, Flynn most excellent two pdf.'s on Comstar covering Robots in the Imperium & adventures involving same:

O Zone

Now a Tech Question:
Could they have some way of stimulating the brain centers where the sense of smell resides?
Could a person be hooked up to something (like a small transmitter) That stimulates that area of smell sense while one watches a show?
HHHMMmmm...
(Could be used as a torture device)

With all of the hackers on the Internet and hacking cell phones and such - would you EVER want something like that in your brain?

Just imagine:

"What? Ewww - my smellaciever is on the fritz again..."

We'll never get those (especially the first one)...not even in Traveller.

Might as well get the Zhodani lie down with the Solomani....

EEEWww...
Imagine sitting at home in front of your "Smellavision" (TM) when someone sends a signal of the sewer backing up smell and it affctes every home on the block.

For the very rich, I imagine custom planets exist in around the Core sector, in which, an entire planet gets devoted to space setting High Nobles en route to & from Capital. After a gruelling session of in the Moot, Nobles need somewhere to unwind with their families and significant others. Whole planets dedicated to every hedonsitic fantasy imaginable.

Meh, that's a little like the cliche of a city that covers a whole planet... Basically, any earth-like, non-hi-pop planet with high tech would easily have huge tracts of land available for amusements of all kinds

Perhaps a planet with zones where people live in replicated historic ages. I mean live, as in not moderns acting the part, but benighted peasants unaware of anything beyond their ancient/medieval/renaissance villages.

Their water supplies are treated with medical nanites that diagnose diseases, allow the symptoms to manifest, and if fatal, induce a death-like coma. The victims are then removed, replaced with synthetic corpses, then cured and re-educated.

Fantasy Planet
I like this idea. Lets name the sections, counties and cities that might be located within.

1) Prehistoric land.
This is where people would have to survive in the wilds with nothing but the clothes on their backs and whatever others before them may have created (spears, clubs, shelters, bow and arrows, etc.)

2) Old Far East (Asia circa 1000 AD)
This is where the Ming Dynesty would be at its most powerful. Either you were a member of the rulers or you were a worker.

3) The Wild West (Circa 1860-1900AD)
This is where people live as farmers, ranchers or towns flok(a select few may be outlaws or entertainers).

4) Pre Space Travel (Circa pre 2100 AD)
This is were people live as either Management of large companies, middle management or workers (a select few may be athletes or entertainers)

What others might there be?

What pleasures await the Traveller in each?
(A celestial house of pleasure perhaps?)

How much do we charge the Travellers?
(more for the better positions in each genre?)
Severl game from the game show thread may be shot here :D
