FINALLY!

SOC-12
We finally got to play last night. It was the first Traveller that my brother and I have played in years (probably going back to the CT days). We got the whole family involved. There were 7 players (+GM) aged 9 - 49. Aside from my brother and myself, none had ever played Traveller before. :) Our technical discussions had almost scared most of the rest of our players off. (Mental note -- don't discuss things like hull points, 100D limits, and other of Traveller's finer points along with the calculations for them around perspective new players. :oo: )

Only one time did my teenage son make an inappropriate comment. :nonono: Aside from that, a good time was had by all. :D

We didn't finish the adventure, but most of the group wants to continue it today. That is, if it starts raining during the day today. We don't want to miss out on too much beach time. I can't really see us playing tonight -- other festivities to participate in. ;)

I am going through my game notes and working on my thoughts for T5 fast play. :coffeegulp: I hope to post something in that regard next week. I didn't realize how much I missed actually playing Traveller as opposed to reading and talking about it. I'm sure glad I brought so many sets of dice.

Cheers,

If you had a successful session, and all had fun, then why complicate things by changing the rules the second time you sat down to play?
I suspect that he made notes on 'how to improve T5 for beginners' based on the experience that he just had with some beginners. The notes are for US, not his players. (just my guess).

and if that is the case - even more details! After a 30+ year hiatus from refereeing [and 30+ years of vaguely playing with Traveller in various forms] I am really wanting to start again. Not entirely sure about T5 (we played loose CT back in the day) so a beginners guide on how things worked in a real session would be great.

Yes, details please.

Which version did you use? CT, MT, GT, T20, MgT, T5?

Did the players roll up characters or did you provide them?

Which adventure?

We used T5. One of my goals is to come up with T5 fast start rules (what to include, what not to include) to bring in new players. I could see while we were sitting at the table, that there were a few "it would have been better for newbies if ... " moments. I asked my brother and our wives for feedback on what would have made things easier on them, and coupled that with my own observations.

I used pre-gen characters with the old CT Traveller Adventure. I converted the adventure's characters to T5, instead of creating new ones.

I think the most rewarding part was when my 9-yr-old niece got up this morning and asked when we were going to play again. I was worried that she, out of the entire group, had the least amount of fun. :)

I was wrong. Even more rewarding was my teenage son who hates everything. "Can we play again today?"

We only played a couple of hours each day. For those of you who know CT-TA (for those who don't, I have tried to eliminate the spoilers) ...

Session 1 - Rescue NPC from thugs. Go to attraction with NPC while NPC tries to retrieve item. Plan heist.

Session 2 - Execute heist. NPC blamed for heist. Freighter crashes. Find lost item of another NPC.

Obviously there has been a little more to it (visits to pawn shops, tracking down people, information, and items, etc.). It hasn't gone quickly, but everyone likes it when they get to roll dice. My key challenge is knowing who has skill levels in which skills so that I can come up with appropriate task rolls to engage everyone. If we get to play today, we hope to be able to jump to the next system.

Cheers,
