"Firefly" Signal GK

Last night on the TV guide channel i caught the last of a report on firefly. They did say fox was ordering 3 more scripts for firefly making a total of 16 episodes.

If you are a fan of the show, spread the word to your family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, anyone else you can think of and ask them to start watching the show. It's not doing well in the ratings, and Fox is considering cancelling it. The current November sweeps period is crucial. If it doesn't do well this month, it won't last until January.
This is the captain of the far trader Minnow responding...I have been watching the show Firefly and will also try writing a letter, will watch this post closely

Well, me for one. We get your broadcast networks up here, but none of your cable stations.

FX and Fox are basically the same channel, though FX has made a few movies and series, like The Shield, but it's really just the rerun channel for Fox. Don't think of them as being different. And if Firefly doesn't do well on Fox, they won't make it on FX, either.

SciFi channel might pick it up, but they are in my bad books because of what they did to Farscape.

Firefly was always meant to be a half-season show, like Buffy was in its first season. The fact that Fox have added three episodes is a very very good sign.

As for bad ratings, Firefly isn't doing well. It's something like 103 out of 109 (but still doing better than Angel). What advertisers like to see is the demographics of the audience. If only 4 million people watch Firefly, compared to 20 Million watching ER, that's bad, of course. But if most of the 4 Million watching Firefly are in the 'lotsa disposable income' bracket, the advertisers will be happy with that. Consider if half of Firefly's audience (2 million people) are big money makers and spenders. Say only a quarter of ER's viewers are in that same bracket (5 million). The numbers start to equalize out somewhat.

Also, what advertisers like are 'faithful' audiences, like the people who watch Buffy, Angel and Firefly. The same people come back again and again to watch which makes advertising more effective.

Etc.

If they make a show that's crap, and we send post cards saying how much we like it, won't that just ensure the only sci-fi that gets on TV is crap?

Now, I know what you're all going to say - crap sci-fi is better than no sci-fi. I don't know that I agree. I'd much rather have one Red Dwarf that ten Andromedas.

How about, "Well, since the dismal failure of Firefly, the show which we put on air for 3 months in the 7pm Friday death slot hasn't seen much of a crowd flocking to it since they go out or something, obviously science fiction is not the way to go. Lets get some more drama or forensic files or a hip new show where a air force pilot works as a lawyer part time, and does...stuff. But *ANYTHING* but sci fi since noone watches it, no matter how good or bad it is."

One of the things hurting "Firefly" is that it is drawing about 5 million viewers an episode, but the series after it, "John Doe," is drawing about 7 million viewers an episode. "Firefly" is not providing a big lead-in audience for "John Doe," which the network feels might become a cult hit then cultural phenom a la "The X-Files." They would prefer that the 2 million viewers who are watching something on another network before "John Doe" comes one would watch "Firefly" instead.

"And certainly not TNT! Yugh!

Actually TNT is now my favorite channel - particularly Monday nights. It has created what I've wanted for a long time - "The Law and Order Channel" - a show that has some of the best plot devices and twists and turns a GM could possibly want.

I'd also take issue about "Enterprise" the show is not that bad and one of the better Trekkie shows. Still not up there with DS9 and a long way behind B5 but still pretty good.

If ever a show called for the axe it would be "Andromeda" a show that has one claim to fame - it put the media back in mediocraty. ;)
