Foundation (tv series)

For All Mankind is OK but a little too much drama and not enough action for me, so I've only watched about half of the episodes.

I've got a free one year of Apple TV+ (bought an iPad) and will probably cancel it until Foundation comes out next year.

If this is the Foundation by Asimov, I will not be watching. I never really liked the series, and stopped halfway through it. I think that I actually tossed the book, which is rare for me to do.

there was an interesting quote something like the powerful yet really boring series...

Asimov was quite the prolific writer but his characters were to me sort of flat. I also think he had published books in all or most the major Dewey Decimal sections (by the 100) as well as his SF.

I did read the original trilogy at least twice and I think I managed most of the rest that came out later, some written by others after he died. The trilogy omnibus was one of the 1st books I got way back when I joined the Science Fiction Book Club.

I honestly kind of wish the technology shown in the trailer looked more atompunkish, like trying to match the books.

Because we have the kind of digital tech to bring such retrotech to life before our very eyes on the silver or small screen.

I know I read the original books, I don't think I followed up with the later novels.

I don't recall them being particularly boring, but I also don't recall them being spectacularly transcending either.

I have not got Apple TV yet (I have an "Apple TV", I just don't subscribe).

I may upgrade mine to a TV 4 (I have a gen 3), and that should let me in if I want to watch this.

But, I'm not going to line up for it.

An Apple TV+ subscription works just fine on my old Apple TV gen 3.

I tried to read the first book a few years ago. I got about 20 pages in and stopped with a meh. I guess I'll have to give it a second go.
The trailer looks interesting, I have to admit.

The one SF book I wish someone would do is The Mote in God's Eye. Holy [bleep]-crackers, Batman, that would rock. \m/

The TV show is based very loosely on the books. So don't expect much. I too was not all that thrilled with the Foundation trilogy. Asimov can't write female characters very well. The series is just a few main characters traveling from one part of the galaxy to another part of it while discussing things over coffee and smokes. Somehow they saved the galaxy just by... I won't spoil it.

The only part of the triolgy I liked (as far as Travelleresque) was the psionic fight scene. But most Traveller players hate psionics in their games.

I loved the Foundation Trilogy and thought the sequels were OK, though some of them just barely.
However I can't imagine it turning out at all well as a TV series.
The Foundation Trilogy was more of a history book, spanning hundreds (or was it thousands?) of years, covering the fall of the Galactic Empire, The Dark Ages, and the rebirth of civilization. As a result of this huge scope it was not as detailed concerning any individual characters as would give actors something to work with, except possibly the Mule. Since I enjoyed reading books such as Edward Gibbon's D&F of the Roman Empire, I really enjoyed Foundation. But Gibbon's book would make a horrible TV series.

Well, I'm waiting for Foundation and "Long way Up" to hit Apple TV, then I'll drop the dime to subscribe for a month or two so I can watch both of those shows and the Tom Hanks WWII destroyer movie (whatever it's called).

Long Way Up is the third installment in Ewan McGregors travel series on motorcycles, the first being Long Way Around, where he goes around the world, followed by Long Way Down, where he travels overland down to South Africa.

Long Way Up is traveling north from the southern tip of South America.

Long Way Around was simply great, I managed to see a 2hr summary of Long Way Down, which was good, but could not get in to the 8 episode long form of it.

I’m watching the Foundation series now. It’s okay. Ironically, it’s best in the parts that are original to the show, and worst in those parts that are adaptations from Asimov’s books.

The metaphor of the genetic dynasty is good stuff.
