Free stuff in traveller...?

As some of you may have noticed I've been talking about and modelling in a free 3d modeling/raytracing program called blender 3d.

Blender is one of many, many useful fully functional and fully featured programs that are available for free. others are bryce 5.5, anim8or, etc .

Anyone who thinks blender can't be a 'real" 3d modeling, raytracing and animation program because it's free needs to go look for a CGI movie called "Elephant's dream", which was made with blender and other freeware to demonstrate the power of freeware. I've seen it and it's easily the equal of anything Pixar does with it's expensive hardware and software.

So, as to how this relates to traveller, I wonder what free stuff might exist in the traveller universe.

Maybe some old spacehands get sick of seeing bloated megacorps rumphumping honest, hardworking spacers with overpriced software, and they write free versions that get the job done just as well.

Maybe someone writes some freeware just for a specific ship type that he's fond of.

Imagine:

"Well, dammitall! Our copy of "Jumpware" just expired, and microsoft wants 2000Cr to renew it. Sunuvabitch, we don't have that after fixing the holes those ghawddamn stinking vargs put in our hull while trying to steal out cargo out of Thetis last month!"

"Uh, captain?"

"Whut?!"

"Uh, well, sir, there's this free jump software called "Freejump" that's been out for a while, and..."

"If it's free it can't be no stinkin' good, ya idjit!"

"Actually, sir, it's fully recommended by the Traveller Aid society."

"Huh? well, they ain't usually full of fece."

"Yes, sir, it was written by a group of retired spacehands who were tired of seeing microsoft screwing over working people with stuff like limited duration software and license agreements."

"Ya, uncle cleon oughtta bust up that ghawddamn microsoft sumday..."

"Yes, sir, anyway, I downed the latest version of freejump and had it plot a few of our recent jumps. In every case it created a fully successful jump program that would have gotten us thru the jump every bit s well as jumpsafe did..."

"Well, is there anythin' wrong wit' it?"

"Ah, well, it doesn't have the animated holographic aid that jumpware has..."

"Yuh mean no Jenny Jumpme?"

"Uh, yes, it just has a regular audio/visual assistance system, no naked girl hologram."

"Well, damn. I shore liked the way she had a screaming orgasm when you hit the jump drive..."

"Uh, yes, captain. That notwithstanding, freejump's default setting calculates the jump factors to 12 decimal points. Jumpware calculates them to 13 places, but no jump ever done required more than 10 decimal values to be fully successful..."

"Whatever that means. I shore will miss Jenny Jumpme, tho..."

"Well, captain, we save 2000Cr using freejump instead of renewing jumpware, and you could buy a VRP of "Debbie does You." for 19.95 Cr..."

"Well, hot damn. Go 'head an' git that there freejump then!"

"Already installed on the mainframe and calibrated to the ship, sir."

"well damn, that's some good news. I'll be in my cabin, doin' some downloading."

"Yes, captain. Please remember your dropcloth this time..."

Ok, so you get the idea. I wonder if there might be 'freeware" in the traveller era, and if megacorps who make money boofooing people on overpriced underpowered spy/adware loaded stuff would try to stop it, maybe by paying insurers not to cover ships using freeware, and if uncle cleon would get his ass off the iridium throne long enough to do something about that...

You're a baaad man Trent :smirk:

Good idea, and great little skit. Gonna have to use both if I can...

...I wonder though. Traveller's computers are... odd. Might be all kinds of hurdles to overcome. Still with some 11,000 worlds and 1,000 plus years there must be loads of unofficial software out there.

Ah, the potential suggestiveness of the word 'jump'. IMTU there's a subsector-wide company in Five Sisters called Sister Jumpers. For some reason I've never gotten around to writing them up for submission to JTAS Online :D.

Well, all humor asides (Thanks for the nice commentary) I'd imagine that the imperium enforces at least a certain set of standards that all computers meant to be used in the imperium must follow.

In one of the only two good products for the mess that was T4, "Emporer's arsenal", Greg porter spent nearly a page on explaining the standards that all imperial weapons had to adhere to by imperial law, and made it clear if they didn't "Uncle Cleon" would come down on them like a ton of plascrete.

Look at today's world: Macs and PCs are different systems, but both use the same internet according to the same standards. And it's not all Macs bowing to PC standards, most PCs use some mac based software for viewing online videos.

I'd imagine that in the 3I there is a set of imperial computer protocol standards that all computers use as a baseline, and the freeware writers probably write to those.

Oh, look: I was trying to come up with an idea for how mainstream retailers might add a lot of useless accessories and chrome to their products to justify the cost, and the idea of an "assistant" that was basically a naked holographic woman just came to mind.

Since it was jump software, "Jenny Jumpme" seemed right...

It was the kind of thing intelligent, responsible people wwriting freeware as a protest against overpriced crap would leave out.

BTW, I can't believe no one's moaned about the "dropcloth" comment and implications thereof yet...

Since half the astrogators out there are female, I'm sure there's a "Jimmy Jumpme" option available too.

I simply can't think of anything constructive to add. :)

The funny thing is that in today's world half of consumers are female (Well, OK not in muslim countries where women aren't allowed to have money or buy anything...) yet when advertisers use sex to sell stuff they usually don't aim it at women nearly as much as they aim it at men.

I mean, you rarely see a guy in a swimsuit being used to plug a product to women. If you see a guy in a swinsuit he's usually trying to sell weight loss, male enhancement or anti-baldness pills TO MEN.

So I'm not sure that there'd be a lot of jimmy jumpme programs, and if there were there'd be a lot less of them than there would be of the jenny jumpme's.

I was busy running a T&T 7 game...

You're a BAAD man, Trent... Very naughty.

Hans: there is, at least in Alaska, a euphamism for self-stimulation which goes "spending some quality time with Rosy Palms and her Five Sisters..."

Which makes Sisters Jumplines sound really... uhm... no, nevermind...

Trent, realize: Homoeroticism in women is tolerated, even encouraged, in western society, provided it's not exclusive of heteroeroticism. (In short, females are encouraged to be male preference bisexuals.)

Men are actively discouraged from homoeroticism entirely. It's a double standard, but it's been a double standard within western societies since ⌧ started showing threesomes.

So the question becomes, will such hangups be likely 3500 years from now? I suspect so, because our primate cousins also show a propensity for multiple females and a single male.... but then again, banobos consider all adults fair game for "handshake equivalent sex"... pick your model...

Interesting idea but I would imagine that office and graphics software model would not be what it is like more akin to the software used for an industrial robot. You get it with the robot and it requires constant modification to be used in your specific circumstances. You need someone with some programming skill to keep it going and not constantly have them send "the Guy" to help solve your software hardware dilemmas.

Maybe the 2k is to call someone and get it running for your specific ship. If you have a crew member with computer 3 or above you can waive that fee and do it yourself.

I can only imagine what a jump program or any other program would be like if they all had a version of "Clippy" the Office paperclip helper.

what would 'target' or 'evasion' programs be like?

Harry the cross-hairs?

I think given the size (bloat?) and presumed maturity (programming wise, not other) of the software each would come with a whole host of options for the interface.

I would hope nothing as pointless and silly as the various help wizards (an actual freaking wizard? a dog digging for my files? an anthropomorphic paper clip?) we suffer with now. But certainly a variety of languages for the voice interface with selectable dialects, accents, races and gender. Not talking AI here, but close to it from the user's perspective.

Maybe we could have "Yosemite Sam", or maybe "Yosemite Solomani", as a targeting program.:D

As for a evasion program, maybe it could be based on George W. Bush and get a bonus if the enemy launched footwear at you.

What? Nobodies going to snivel about my "political" comment? Guys, are you feeling OK? I expected at least 3 good snivels by now...
