Giving 'Other' a new lease of life.

Without delving into magazine articles the Other career offers two 'templates' that are otherwise missing from LBB1+S4, law enforcement and agent.

You want to be an ex-cop or ex-spook in CT then Other is one way to do it...

Thought experiments aside, this decision mystifies me.
I was so excited to get S4 BITD but was very underwhelmed. Don't use it today and stick to the Book 1 careers with no issues. Many of the S4 careers are odd careers for PC adventurers. If I need a doctor or belter or bureaucrat, I just make one.

Step 1 - Characters in the Other career get two skills per term as per SMC modification of S:4 CotI careers with no commission or promotion.

Step 2 - the player has the option of rolling on the Patron table to determine what the character arc of the Other career is.

Step 3 - the player can choose one skill at level 1 as an automatic skill just like most careers get relevant to the character arc.

Jake is rolling a character, he chooses Other for a change.

He rolls a 6 and a 2 for a shopkeeper prior career arc. He chooses Admin 1 as his automatic skill.

Yes! I immediately noticed how, as written, that "other" should be a last choice for careers. Two skills upon enlistment and one per term after that, with the coveted Jack of Trades skill not appearing until the EDU:8+ advanced education table (a table which also regurgitates half of the "not so educated" advanced education skills). It certainly needs help, and what you propose is pretty close to what I have been kicking around.

I'm a noobie to the rules, and while I do recall seeing a patron issue mentioned in one of my books could you direct me to which one the patron table is detailed in?

There are several.
There's a patron table in The Traveller Book, and in Bk3-77 p 22, and in Bk3-81 p 28... but it's just one-word tags.

There's a whole CT supplement called 76 Patrons. Each is a mini-adventure, except the handful of Merc Tickets.
