I just watched the Firefly episode where they deliver the load of cattle, and this brought it back to mind!

Have the family discuss the favor, which the players find out was something they did out of ignorance, and never got caught, during their prior service...

Y'know, kind of like Jaine in Firefly....

I am so going to have to get a copy of Firefly on DVD, so many references to it on this board that I'm missing out on.

Aramis:
Yes that's a possibility I hadn't considered tying it into chargen. Ummm. . . did that once when my players liked a one off so much they wanted an instant continuation on the day.

I had in mind some kind of paradox, sort of like the time Neo first meets The Oracle in the original 'Matrix' and she tells him not to worry about the vase which he goes on to break. Now being The Oracle she knew that he was going to break the vase, but if she hadn't told him would he have turned around and broken it?

So I was thinking that the spot of bother the stranger thanks the players for helping his sister out of is in fact yet to happen, but clearly must happen. I just couldn't work out a good enough hook to be sure to entice the players to look into the sisters problems unbidden on arrival in system. To work it would probably need more build up than the single stranger routine.

Of course once the players solve the sister's problems just how did the stranger know about it before it happend? Wheels within wheels.

I'd say that the bigger problem is how did he know. This could be solved any number of sci-fi ways; wierd alien power (Droyne coyn casting perhaps?), the "Special" psionic power; really, really, precise psychohistory (Hari Seldon could pull it off in the first Foundation book, to a reasonable degree of accuracy), etc.

The getting the players involved is easy. They don't know who the sister is. Then they happen to meet a beautiful woman, who ends up taking a liking to one of the PCs. Then, after some level of involvement, he and/or they discover her problem(s). Whether she asks for help or not depends on how "hooked" the pc is, but if they are typical gamer guys it they should be quite willing to offer. It's the oldest trick in the book, and works every time (I have done it myself many times), unless either you make it look too contrived (and they thus suspect that something is up), or you're playing will an all-female cast of PCs, which would be interesting, if improbable. ;)

Stop what you're doing, right now. Run to your car. Break the speed limit. Crash into the front of the store so you don't have to waste time finding a parking space or doing somehing silly like taking time to open the door to the store, rush in...

...and freakin' buy Firefly.

Do it.

You'll thank yourself later.

Watch the show, straight through, in order, then watch the movie Serenity (and don't watch Serenity before you've seen the series).

Only then will you be prepared for the next Firefly movie that will be airing on the SciFi channel soon (and, fingers crossed, a second series).

Agree agree agree.

Get Firefly.

btw, has anyone seen a 1989 movie 'Cohen & Tate'? Hitmen with little kid road movie. Adam Baldwin plays a character not unlike a young, wet behind the ears Jayne...
