Welcome to the new COTI server. We've moved the Citizens to a new server. Please let us know in the COTI Website issue forum if you find any problems.
We, the systems administration staff, apologize for this unexpected outage of the boards. We have resolved the root cause of the problem and there should be no further disruptions.
I'm new to Traveller and still struggling (as a referee) to convince my players that sci-fi-roleplaying is actually a lot of fun. The retrogressive style of Classic Traveller seems to be the major problem. But we'll get that fixed...

Knowing today's rapid technological development, it's sometimes just pretty funny when you look through the classic books.. but as already mentioned, the most important thing is to tell a good story, after all.
i've always thought there is a lot of incredible technology in the classic setting . its just that there is a lot of places it hasn't reached for financial/political/religious/other reasons . just make up stuff that seems appropriate . e.g. handheld computors are not mentioned in the books because its so obvious that every traveller has one . aslo it seems plausible that most of the real advances are based on one or two fundemental discoveries ( jump drive , anti-grav ) , and that everything else is just variations of things we already have .
also i find if im ref-ing its often good to let the players drive the technology . if they can think of something they want/need it may well be available at an appropriate tech level and price .
I'm a ref -is this a confession?- but to be honest I'd rather like to play traveller once. -sniff- I've reffed Classic, Megatraveller, GURPS:Traveller and now I'm converting to T20.
I have only played ONE Traveller session- in 1980. Ever since that day, whenever a Traveller game was held, I ran it.
I thought the tech in the Classic Traveller basic books was funny, with the exceptions of starships and lasers, the tech was pretty much 1950-ish. The extended books (books 4-7) cleaned that up a little bit, computers were still glorified ENIAC's, though.
TNE's Fire, Fusion & Steel had the best rules for equipment construction, albiet pretty complicated. No problem, with a scientific calculator and a MS in Quantum physics, you could figure them out
I have ordered T20. I am waiting for it. I will start a new game once I get it.
So far - and I've played once since I played this past Saturday - I prefer to play, since I'm not sure how to develop my ideas into stories or sessions/campaigns. This doesn't mean that I'll never referee, but only that I won't referee soon.
I referee primarily, I enjoy it more. I havent refered a Traveller game in nearly 17 years but the new T20 has sparked my interest in it and I have dusted off my old sector and am looking around for ideas to work into a new campaign
