Good CT CharGen Program?

I'm looking for a good program to roll up CT characters using Book 1 and Supplement 4.

I've run across several CT chargen programs in the past, but the authors always seem to take liberties with the basic chargen Traveller method.

I'm looking for something that uses the exact Classic Traveller rules and nothing else--just the official rules.

Any suggestions?

Have you considered the old Paragon Software adventures; "MegaTraveller 1: The Zhodani Conspiracy" or "MegaTraveller 2: The Quest for the Ancients"? The character generation portion of these adventures is straight out of the player's manual, no house rules or modifications. And the die rolls are brutally honest.

OK, it is MT and not CT as you requested, so it includes Special Assignments and Cascade skills that aren't in Book 1. But I notice that all of the cascade skills include the Book 1 skill that they replace in the skill tables, so it shouldn't be too hard to keep to Book 1 results. And you have a choice of using Basic (Book 1) or Advanced (Books 4-7) character generation.

I know that the programs are available, gratis, on the internet, but for the life of me I cannot remember where I got my copies. Good games to, by the way.

Have you thought of using the Classic Traveller Utility? Best I can tell it doesn't take any liberties with char gen and uses only LBB1-3 and SUP4.

What I like about it aside from a faithful Char Gen system is that it also includes a faithful World Builder, Encounter Generator, Ship Builder, Equipment Data, Library Data, and Skill Definitions. The Encounter Generator is the only place he took liberties and that was with the NPC creation part.

The library data is taken from SUP 8 & 11 and the Skill List/Defs are from LBB1-7

Stephen Koo's CT Utility v.0.9.1 beta is freeware and online here in the fLibrary and at
http://dasa.on.ca/games/CTUtilityV091c.zip

check his Readme.txt for copyrights and how-to.

Add this to Heaven and Earth, Merchant Prince Trader (also in the fLibrary), and The Classic Traveller Equipment Library (in the fLibrary) and you have a complete system for running any Classic Traveller game from your computer.

( I only use the CT Utility for char gen and pre-game work - that is why I recommend the CT Equipment Library for in game use when you need to look up something about Equipment.)

As the author of the SignalGK tools, I'd like to note that I've been working on a version of the character generation tool that you can download and run offline in a browser, as long as that browser is Firefox:

http://www.signalgk.com/ct.htm

Again, it's a work in progress, but it's fully functional. Like the older version, it's not interactive - you press a button and a character pops out. Give it a shot!

They both can be found at Abandonia.

They don't need Dosbox to run under XP either.

I thought they did.

I actually have both of them, in the box. I purchased them new, years ago.

I load them, but they won't run. I'm not sure how to make them run. I thought they needed a Windows 3.1 emulator or something.

make sure to install them in your c:\ folder. Don't put them any deeper. I have mine installed in c:\megat1 and c:\megat2

Make sure you get the update files too for Game 1.

If they still wont run then grab the latest version of DOSBox(v0.70). It can be found at,

http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/download.php?main=1

It runs well under DosBox and "should" work around any issues you have on your XP machine.

i was thinking... it could be that you are installing them from the disks. WonkyDohs may not like that, even if you are setting compatibility and jumping thru all the hoops to install it.

I suggest you just download them from Abandonia and unzip them to your own folders in the C:\ folder. I wouldn't even bother adjusting the "compatibility" settings. Mine ran without any modifications. If they still wont work then go with DosBox.

If you're willing to tolerate MT basic character generation along the lines of the PC games, I knocked together a javascript/html version a year or so ago.

I tried to be as faithful to the MT rules as I could, though it gives you a couple of options on rolling stats (one of which is straight 2d6) and doesn't enforce invaliding out/failed re-enlistments (though obviously you can choose to obey the roll).

There's a copy at: http://www.box.net/shared/0on9llehr8
