Heaven & Earth

It's telling me "Component 'TWISTE~1.OCX' not correctly registered: file is missing or invalid"

Any help?

To clarify this post, I downloaded it off Traveller Downport, unzipped it, installed it, and opened the "Heaven & Earth" application among the many documents, and it did this. Indeed, there is no such file in any of the folders (zipped, unzipped, installed).

Bet you're not running windows XP are you. I got the same error when I tried to install it in windows Vista Ultimate, but it worked under XP.

Manually register it from an elevated command prompt... (ex: right-click on Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator' - command prompt is generally under 'Accessories' from 'All Programs' in start menu)

Then type:
regsvr32 file

Where file is the full path and filename of the ocx file, like C:\Windows\System32\TwistedPixel.ocx as a for instance.

(Re-installing with elevated privileges may avoid this problem - or disabling UAC during install along with AV programs.)

[Note: this is general info - not specific to Heaven and Earth]

It's telling me the path I specified is invalid (when I use the location given in the top bar in Windows Explorer). And the exact name of the file is "TWISTEDPIXEL.OC_" - is this the same file (the error popup told me "TWISTE~1.OCX" was missing, and I indeed don't have a file called that).

.OC_ sounds like a compressed file - the OCX version needs to be extracted. (7-zip will do this, IIRC as well as the Windows built in cabinet extraction program 'Extract'.)

First, just try right clicking and seeing if there is an extract/decompress option.

I already extracted it, and installed. I now have three "Heaven & Earth" folders -zipped, unzipped and installed. The file I tried is in the unzipped folder, since the installed folder doesn't contain any file of that name. But the zipped and unzipped folders have the same name, so this may be confusing Command Prompt (but I think the file is in the zipped folder also).

The regsrv32 command will only work with the final .OCX file. The .OC_ is a compressed version of the .OC_.

If you do not have the .OCX file, only the .OC_ file - then the .OC_ needs to be uncompressed.

The original zip file can contain compressed files that have to be further uncompressed even after being unzipped - in fact, that is not uncommon. The zip file, unzipped folder should both have a copy of the .OC_ file. Uncompress the unzipped folder .OC_ file and copy to the install folder and then run the regsrv32 command with that folder and the .OCX filename.

It doesn't appear to be further decompressable. There is a "Twisted Pixel" file in the installed folder, but that's a read-me text document.
(sheesh... this is getting complicated... ;))

For Windows 7 64 bit, I just installed it, and then did a "Properties" on the main executable, and in the compatibility box set the compatibility to Windows XP SP3.

It does give me a warning that it is missing the CTL3D32.DLL file, but when I click OK, the application seems to open normally and work fine.

YMMV.

TTFN,
Jay

Did you actually try the windows extract command?

You can try reinstalling using right click and selecting 'Run as Administrator' and with AntiVirus crap disabled... and answering yes to any UAC (i.e. - the ones asking for your permission) and overwrite prompts.

DangerousThing - that DLL may be used by certain parts of the program only. There are plenty of online instructions for installing it on Win7.

Command Prompt tells me "extract" is not a valid command, even if I run it as administator; is there a special way I would need to format it?

Thanks, what Iwas getting on search was a torrent of what looked like a game.

edit, just tried it out, very nice.

I'm on Windows 8.1. (blech!)

I right-clicked on the executable file and went to the compatability tab. Told it to run as if it were in an NT environment. Works like a charm now.
