Heavy Grav tank: Kriegshammer type

wbyrd

SOC-13
the big brother of the Fast tank I posted earlier. it has a very different look than it's lighter sibling. as soon as the new rules are complete i will be stating this one out as well..although I may have to tweak it a bit between now and then :D

as usual feedback suggestions commentary is always welcome.

Armor:
Main:layered composite armor reinforced with bonded superdense alloys.
Additional: Spaced armor skirts, with reactive armor packets.

Defensive systems
ECM/Jammers/decoy system
Hull mounted laser dazzlers
Hull mounted dynamic optic camouflage system
Hull mounted cooling and thermal deception panels.

Sensors:
Hull mounted
Phased array artificial aperture radar

Additional systems:
micro drone communications and control system
4 drones in rear deck cells
Pressure/vacuum/hazardous environment seals
NBC Seals
Radiation shielding
Extended life support ( 48 hours)
Water/moisture seals
Internal Spall liner
fire suppression systems
chemical power cell Auxiliary Power Unit: allows only basic low noise/low emissions maneuver and recovery operations

The MBT has heavier armor, and a more rugged chassis to survive hits that would reduce lighter tanks, and armored vehicles to burning wrecks. It's heavy gun is designed to engage rapidly maneuvering armor at long range, with devastating firepower. while secondary self defense weapons allow for close range point defense, and ant-infantry fire when engaged at close range. These features make the MBT the iron fist of any military.

Though it lacks the ability and rapid movement abilities of gunships and fast tanks/AFVs the Main Battle tank is still highly mobile and can strike with great speed from both orbit and ground based positions. To survive in a high threat environment the MBT has many of the same systems deployed on scouts, and other vehicles, to evade, and defeat enemy detection and targeting systems. While the more agile vehicles have greater tactical, and strategic mobility, the MBT is unmatched in it's raw firepower, and armor protection.

Deployed in squads, platoons and companies the MBT forms the core of a heavy armored formation, with attached light armor, and armored cavalry/Infantry,air support, and artillery units to form an effective combined arms force. Few all MBT forces larger than companies are formed. Due to the expense, complexity, and intense maintenance needs of an MBT unit.In general battalions, regiments, are almost always mixed force formations.

In action the MBT often moves flanked by lighter units, with scouts and gunships searching for hostile forces. Once detected the MBT units converge and execute either a high speed impromptu, or hasty assaults against unprepared and dispersed forces.Or more commonly a deliberate attack against fixed, and prepared enemies. In very few cases will a MBT unit attack other MBT force without a deliberate plan of action. Only when the enemy is caught completely by surprise, or other tactical considerations are considered will an MBT engage a heavy force at speed, without a coordinated movement and engagement plan.

The MBTs main gun is optimized for anti-armor fire, it provides no real effective bombardment, or fire support ability to the vehicle. its high velocty small diamet gun will blast through most structures, and completely pass through thin skinned vehicles, but will not generate much in the way of concussion, or fragmentation. For such work other more specialized vehicles will move into position to provide support fire, while the MBT provides an overwatch against enemy armor, and anti-vehicle assets. In cases where rapid fire support is needed the MBT can use it's heavy multi-purpose munitions to fire on structures, or in airbusrt mode engage infantry and light vehicles. In addition it's secondary guns can provide effective fire support in limited conditions. The use of an MBT as infantry support is considered a waste of resources by most commanders, who use it as such with hesitation.

The MBT can execute orbit to surface assaults with some degree of surprise. the sudden appearance of a vehicle which can ignore light vehicle mounted missiles and anti-aircraft fire overwhelms most ground defenses easily. when weapons that can deal significant damage to an MBT are deployed hey are more likely to be tasked with engaging assault transport, landing ships, and other light starships used for planetary assault. This has made the frequency of direct orbit to surface armor strikes higher, and gives some degree of safety to lighter forces that may otherwise be forced to deal with local armored defenders with only hand held or light vehicle mounted anti-tank weapons.

Notes:
the slighty smaller vehicle next the bottom image is a fast Grav tank. http://wbyrd.deviantart.com/art/LgKz-124-Shrike-Gravitic-Armored-Fighting-Vehicle-567811564
the smaller vehicle is roughly the same size as an M-1 Abrams but has a much lower profile, the extra size of the MBT is mostly in hieght to allow for more armor, and ammunition storage.

the model is created in sections, although the missile pods are fixed...the upper turret is made so that I can rotate it, raise and lower the guns etc. to my surprise the model is also suitable for 3d printing without any extra clean, up or repair work to create a usable model...with the exception of the cupola which has to be one piece for printing so the guns are fixed ....not a major problem if you want to use the model as a piece for a mintures war game, or RPG session....

I think the side profile is too flat.

Take your light grav tank hull, copy it and invert the copy. Stick the two halves together, maybe widen it a touch and then put the heavy turret on it, the side armour skirts etc.

I'm not sure the missiles will be of much use by the way, point defence systems should be built into AFV to take out anything but a missile swarm.

edit to add - I love your work by the way.

thanks for the suggestions :D

My first impulse had been to fatten up the fast tan hull and put a larger turret on it. Then I decided to start from scratch and build entire new hull, with a different design style.

The camouflage on the tank makes it hard to actually see -- I mean, it basically works in messing up the lines on the tank, so it's hard (for me) to judge. A simple, light tan color would be better IMHO for the purposes of discussion.

does that help any?

Tell me more about this printing......
A work shop here in town has 3d printers. I joined it a month or so ago. I've learned how ti make my models print friendly...the two tanks, several fighters and other items...are suitable for printing.

I cna print them off in any size from 25mm scale up to about 15cm in the largest measurement...bigger if I break the models up into part. the tanks are actually models so that keyholes for fitting the parts together are already built into the computer model.

that's what I happiest about...I can turn an image into a physical object now :D

being able to do my own models is fun, being able to do the artwork for my own work in the future is more fun..and potentially profitable :D...

being able to literally create an image, model it, then turn it into something i can set on my desk....:D :D :D...now all I have to do is figure out how to make it pay for itself.

They were hiding in my brain..big dark scary place....

If i can get them printed out I'll post a few pics...got a couple of guys who play miniature games interested in getting a few as stand ins for vehicles in other games.
