Help out a noob

I'll shamelessly plug my Classic Traveller website here:

SignalGK

There, you'll find PDFs for record keeping, and online tools to generate characters, worlds and animal encounters.

The short adventures are some of the most fun written for Traveller, in my experience. They typically had more conflict and combat, it seems, than the regular adventures; sometimes that helps with new players. One of my favorites is Divine Intervention, which is a sort of Mission Impossible scenario.

As an aside, for file sharing check out box.net.

Sorel, the only addition I would suggest would be to graft in a task system -- and I'm not sure if LBBs Zero through Eight have a true task system in them.

One such system was produced late in Classic Traveller's life, and was propagated into MegaTraveller. Others can describe it better than I, and many variants have been produced, but in general we've found the concept to be very useful.

One other lack in CT is a coherent task or skill resolution system; various skills list various resolution methods. Combat is coherent... 8+ for everything....

For players used to modern one-mechanic games, this may come as a shocker.

Sorel, I was in your exact same boat about 5 years ago: a long time RPGer with a fresh Book 0-8 and no real experience with Traveller. You've definitely come to the right place! The nice folks here have always been extremely friendly to newbies. Don't hesitate to ask stupid questions!

I'd agree that Supplement 4 is great to own for a Classic Trav campaign. In my experience players generally appreciate having a few more careers options at chargen. I got my copy on eBay for a few bucks.

I have the same bitch with Traveller adventures. They require a lot of work on the GM's part. I like to take a ready-made advenure--one that has everything already in it--and then tweak it to my tastes.

Too many times, Traveller adventures are really just adventure ideas.

Computers have made this easier (H&E, for instance, to roll up details on a planet in about a minute...or some of the PC programs to roll up NPCs in a second or so).

What you get, though, is usually a better adventure--since you took the bare bones idea and developed it on your own--than the pre-packaged adventures you see in most rpg's.

I still like the pre-packaged ones, though. I'll tweak whatever I need to. It's a time-thing.

There are a couple of Traveller adventures that are pretty complete, though. Try "The Traveller Adventure", "Flaming Eye", "Knightfall". All of those require very little addition by the GM.

2) Under very basic CT (Classic Traveller) you have no real character advancement; under the later books (Mercenary and High Guard, which you have in your 0-8 reprint) you advance by getting trained, which takes .
I used to believe this, but there's a very clear experience system in The Traveller Book (I assume it's in Book 1 as well).

It just takes forever (game years) to advance your character.
