HG crew rounding carification

You didn't misinterpret anything you modified the rules to suit your universe. My apologies for supplying the recommended ratio per HG2.

You were right Tom. I've missed that for years now. I can get away with it in MTU, but not if I bring a fleet to a TCS battle.

Never apologize for being correct, particularly to a friend. Friends keep us in line.:)

Howdy rancke,

I concede the point.

The next question that pops into my head is why anyone would use ships troops at all. Ship's crew is better than marines for running ship's systems (except guns), but what advantage does ship's troops have? Are they cheaper? Easier to train? Able to help out with ship's systems?

Hans

Why anyone would use ships troops at all?

Every member of the ship's crew acting as Ship's Troops is one sailor not running the ship's systems.

What advantage does ships troop's have?

Ship's troops have access to a wider range of combat weapons suited for ranges encountered in boarding actions.

Are they cheaper?

Looking at Book 5 HG I can't say if Ship's Troops are cheaper I can't seem to find a salary table. However, if one uses the Book 4 salaries for Book 5 then the answer is no.

Looking at the Crew Salaries and comparing with Book 4 page 11 I'd say yes. In Book 4 salaries range from Cr300, a private, to Cr2,000 for a colonel. Book 2 the salaries range from Cr1,000, a gunner, to Cr6,000 for a pilot.

Easier to train?

Based on character generation I'd say sailors and Ship's Troops are on the same level of training.

Able to help out with ship's systems?

My answer is yes, since many of the same skill sets are used by all the character generation rules. Of course this cross training has to be allowed by the GM and players.

Thanks for the reply, I dislike being the bearer of conflicting information thus shattering some good designs. I've been in the same spot when I missed something in the rules and designed stuff. Which is why I keep posting questions that probably have been answered more than once.

I'm still finding out that I'm overlooking rules.

Thanks again for putting up with me.
