High Guard graded "A" for realism

Check out THIS interesting article that speculates on space combat in the far future.

Several books, TV, movies are discussed, along with modern theory. When it comes down realism, though, it's Traveller that is at the top of the list, given a grade of "A" for its depiction of space battles in the future.

On a side note, Hunter, I see your name in the URL. Do you have anything to do with that web site?

Hm. Well, given what it's being compared to, I guess Traveller might be relatively realistic. On the scale of realism in SF, nothing mentioned on that page (including Traveller) is above a C.

I believe that the hunter in the URL refers to the title of the article: "Hunters in the Great Dark, Part 1".
The assigned grades seem awfully subjective, imho.

I've always thought that Steve Gallacci pretty much defined realistic space combat in his series Erma Felna EDF.

And the rules for the Albedo RPG detail it out... It's FAR more realistic than HG...

It's also NOT fun to Roleplay... essentially, it's a single pass, and usually an Autonomous Combat Vehicle impact is catastrophic for the target. (Think 10Td 20G missiles!)

And even if you manage to kill the inbound ACV's you still have to deal with the cloud of hyper-velocity fragments.

Not fun if one punctures your hull and hits you.

IMHO: very subjective article, but some grains of truth in there. I have serious objections to his notion that ships with inactive drives will be "stealthy". I still believe that regardless of one's drive status, hiding behind an astronomical body will be the only reliable method to hide a ship from others. IMETU (E for eventual), sensors will be used for qualitative data-gathering much more than for detection.

Have you seen my new CT Sensor rules? If interested, check them out HERE.

I re-installed Freelancer awhile back. Talk about nonrealistic! Flaming ships and explosive gas pockets in open space.
